Can Stripe take money out of my bank account if I refund online orders?
Updated 10 October 2026
Yes, in one case. If refunds are bigger than your payments, your Stripe balance can go negative and Stripe may debit your bank account.
- Your bank account must allow both credits and debits.
- This only happens when refunds exceed the money coming in.
- Keep enough balance when you refund large orders.
- Check your Stripe balance before bulk refunds.
- Your account country decides your Stripe fees and rules.
