What happens if a refund to my customer's card fails?
Updated 15 October 2026
The money comes back to you. The customer's bank returns it to your Stripe balance, which can take up to 30 days from the post date. You then repay the customer another way.
- A refund can fail when the customer's bank or card cannot process it, for example a closed account.
- Stripe tells you with a refund.failed event, and the refunded amount is added back to your balance.
- Agree another way to repay, such as a bank transfer, and tell the customer what is happening.
- A refund made shortly after the order may show as a reversal, where the charge simply drops off the statement.
