Will WhatsApp usernames hide my customers' phone numbers from my restaurant?
Updated 7 October 2026
Sometimes. When a customer has a username, the app shows it instead of their number. You still see the number if you chatted or called in the last 30 days, or they are in your contacts.
- The 30-day check is per business phone number. It counts if you messaged or called them, or they messaged or called you.
- A customer in your contact book keeps their number visible to you.
- Otherwise the API sends a business-scoped user ID (BSUID). It identifies each user per business portfolio.
- If a customer with a username chats with you first, you will not see their number unless they choose to share it.
Collect delivery details without their number
Customers enter their name and delivery address on your Menuthere ordering page, so the kitchen has what it needs to deliver or contact them without relying on a WhatsApp number.
