QR code menu for ice cream and gelato shops
Updated October 20, 2026
A QR code menu for an ice cream shop shows today's flavors on the guest's phone while they wait in line, lets them pick scoops, a cone or cup and toppings, and takes ice cream cake orders for the day you can make them. With Menuthere, a code on the window or the case opens your menu without an app, you switch a flavor off the moment the tub runs dry, and Menuthere takes 0% commission. Menu codes and ordering are on the Free plan.
In short
- Scoops as sizes, flavors as a group: one scoop, two or three, then "choose up to" that many flavors.
- The flavor limit belongs to the item, so a 2-scoop and a 3-scoop cup are two items. Details below.
- Today's case in one tap: switch a flavor off when the tub's empty; guests see it as Unavailable.
- Allergens at the case: name nuts in the flavor options that contain them, because flavors are options, not items.
- A real Menuthere scoop shop: RivaReno Gelato Brickell in Miami takes takeaway orders on its own Menuthere website.
Which code goes where in a scoop shop
| Spot | Code | What the guest can do | Plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| The window or the line outside | Digital menu code, sized to read from a step back | Read today's flavors, prices and allergens before reaching the case | Free |
| Benches, tables, the patio | A table QR code per table | Order sundaes and shakes to the table | Free |
| Door, flyers, the cake display | Your store link's QR code | Order pints and cakes for pickup, or delivery if you run it | Free; cake pre-orders on Lite |
| Pint lids and cake boxes | Your store link | Reorder next time | Free |
A line in July reads the window from a meter or more away, so the code there needs to be bigger than a table card's: a code scans from about ten times its width, which is about 15 cm for a window read from 1.5 m, against about 3.5 cm on a table card. The QR code size calculator works it out for your link.

| Cone or cup | Cup, sugar cone, waffle cone +$1.50 | Add-on group, single choice, required |
| Toppings | Sprinkles, hot fudge, whipped cream +$0.75 each, up to 4 | Add-on group, multiple, "Up to 4" |
| Pints to go | Pint $12, quart $20 | Sizes on a "Pint to go" item, with its own one-flavor group |

Why a double and a triple are separate items
A flavor group's "Up to" number is fixed on the item, not on each size. If "Scoop cup" had sizes for one, two and three scoops, its flavor group would allow the same number of flavors for all three. So make Single scoop, Double scoop and Triple scoop their own items, with flavor groups of "Up to 1", "Up to 2" and "Up to 3". With More than one of each on, a guest can choose dark chocolate twice for a double, and the order shows "Dark chocolate ×2". Mark the flavor group Required so nobody orders an empty cup. "Up to" is a maximum, so a guest could pick one flavor on a double; that's still two scoops of it in practice.
Today's flavors, every day
The case changes daily, and the phone menu has to keep up.
- A flavor runs out. A single flavor option has no off switch of its own, so the quickest route is to remove it from the flavor groups while it's out, and add it back when the next batch is ready. If your flavors are few and fixed, list them as items in a "Today's flavors" category instead, where each has its own on/off switch.
- An item runs out, such as waffle cones or a sundae: switch it off and guests see Unavailable.
- Seasonal hours. Set your working hours for the season. When you're closed, the menu stays readable, and on Lite guests can pre-order a cake for a time you're open.
- Today's board. The free daily specials board prints the flavor of the day for the window.
Ice cream cakes and pints to go
Cakes need a day or two. On Lite, limit pre-orders to your cakes, set the notice (for example 2 days) and the days you make them, and checkout only offers dates that meet it. A cake and a cone in one basket are asked to split, so walk-in treats still order normally. Selling pints and cakes for pickup and delivery is its own job, with its own setup: see online ordering for ice cream shops. This page sticks to what happens in the shop.
Allergens at the dipping cabinet
Scoop-shop guests ask about the same handful of allergens every day, and the case is where cross-contact happens: one scoop, many tubs. Each item can carry any of 14 allergens, and guests see them when they tap it. The ones that matter in a scoop shop:
| Allergen | Where it hides | How to show it |
|---|---|---|
| Milk | Every dairy flavor; many sorbets don't have it | On the item; name dairy-free flavors in a Vegan and dairy-free category |
| Tree nuts | Pistachio, butter pecan, praline toppings | In the flavor option's name ("Pistachio · tree nuts") and the item's allergens |
| Peanuts | Peanut butter swirl, chopped-nut toppings | Same as tree nuts |
| Eggs | Custard bases and French vanilla | On the item |
| Gluten | Cones, cookie dough, brownie pieces | On the cone options and the items that contain them |
| Soy | Some chocolate coatings and vegan bases | On the item |
Because flavors are add-on options, an allergen ticked on the item covers the cup, not each flavor. So name the allergen in the option itself when only some flavors carry it, and say on the menu whether you use separate scoops for nut flavors. The free allergen chart maker prints a chart for the case from what you tick.

Paid by card through your own Stripe account at Stripe's standard US price of 2.9% + 30¢, the fee is $1.32 ($1.02 + $0.30). Menuthere's commission is $0. A shop doing 60 orders on a summer Saturday passes the Free plan's 50 orders in a day, so the season needs Lite at $17 a month, with unlimited orders.

Not a fit if
- You need one scoop item whose flavor limit changes with size. Use separate items, as above.
- Flavors must switch on and off from the case tablet one by one while staying inside one flavor group. Use a "Today's flavors" category if you need per-flavor switches.
- You need a deposit on cake orders. Pre-orders are paid like any other order.
- Your POS must receive the orders. Menuthere has no ready-made link to Square, Toast or Clover.
Set up your ice cream shop's QR code menu
- Create your store. Search for your shop on Google to fill in the name, address and photos, or start by hand.
- Add scoop items. Make single, double and triple scoop items, each with a required flavor group of up to 1, 2 or 3.
- Add cones, toppings and pints. Add a required cone-or-cup group, a toppings group and pint sizes.
- Tag allergens. Tick allergens on each item and name nuts in the flavor options that contain them.
- Set up cake notice. On Lite, limit pre-orders to your cakes with the notice and days you need.
- Print the codes. Print a large menu code for the window and table codes for the patio.
Menu codes and ordering are free, with 0% commission.
FAQs
What is a QR code menu for an ice cream shop?
It's a code on your window, case or tables that opens your shop's menu on a guest's phone, with today's flavors, prices and allergens. A table code or your store link also lets guests order.
Can guests choose several flavors for a double scoop?
Yes. Give the double scoop a required flavor group with up to 2, and leave More than one of each on so a guest can choose the same flavor twice.
Why can't one scoop item have a different flavor limit for each size?
The flavor group's limit is set on the item, not on each size. Make single, double and triple scoops separate items, each with its own limit.
How do I take ice cream cake orders?
On Lite, limit pre-orders to your cakes, set how much notice you need and pick the days you make them. Checkout then offers only dates that meet the notice.
How do I show which flavors are out today?
Remove a flavor from the flavor groups while it's out and add it back later. If you want a one-tap switch for each flavor, list flavors as items in a Today's flavors category.
Is a QR code menu free for ice cream shops?
Yes. Menuthere's Free plan includes menu codes, table codes and ordering, with up to 50 orders a month and 0% commission. Lite, at $17 a month, adds unlimited orders, card payments and cake pre-orders.
