QSR meaning: what is a quick service restaurant?

Updated 19 October 2026

QSR stands for quick service restaurant. It is a food business built for speed. Customers order at a counter, a kiosk, an app or a QR code. They pay first and get their food in minutes. There is little or no table service. In the UK, McDonald's, Greggs, KFC and most independent chippies, kebab shops and pizza takeaways all fit the QSR meaning.

What is a QSR? The short definition

A quick service restaurant is any outlet where:

  • you order and pay before you eat, not after;
  • food is ready in minutes, often made to a set recipe;
  • prices are low to mid, with a short menu;
  • most food leaves the building: takeaway, collection, drive-thru or delivery;
  • service is self-serve. Staff don't take orders at the table.

"Fast food restaurant" means much the same thing. QSR is simply the trade term. You see it in industry reports, EPOS brochures and franchise packs.

QSR examples in the UK

TypeTypical UK examples
Burger and chicken chainsMcDonald's, Burger King, KFC
Bakery and sandwichGreggs, Subway, Pret A Manger
Pizza delivery and collectionDomino's, Papa John's, independent pizza takeaways
IndependentsFish and chip shops, kebab shops, Chinese and Indian takeaways, fried chicken shops
Coffee to goGrab-and-go coffee kiosks and many high-street coffee chains

Market researchers put coffee shops, bakeries and street food under the QSR umbrella too. Lumina Intelligence said in June 2025 that branded QSRs take just over a third of total UK foodservice turnover.

QSR vs fast casual vs casual dining

The words get mixed up. Here is the simple split.

Fast casual meaning: a step up from fast food. You still order at a counter or on an app, but the food is fresher, the room is nicer and the bill is a bit higher. Some people class fast casual as a type of QSR. Others keep it separate. The spend per head and wait times above are rough guides, not official rules.

How a QSR works

  1. Order. At the counter, on a self-order kiosk, on an app or website, or by scanning a QR code.
  2. Pay. Card, phone or cash, before the food is made.
  3. Kitchen. The order prints as a ticket or shows on a kitchen display system.
  4. Hand over. At the counter, on a tray, through a drive-thru window or out with a rider.

Speed is the whole business. Shaving 30 seconds off each order means more customers served in the lunch rush.

The tech a QSR needs

A small UK QSR does not need everything the big chains have. Start with these:

  • A till or EPOS. It takes orders and records sales. See EPOS for takeaways.
  • A card machine. Most customers pay by card or phone.
  • Phone ordering. Customers order ahead online or by QR code, so the counter queue shrinks. Read self-ordering kiosk vs QR ordering to compare costs.
  • A kitchen printer or screen, so no order gets lost.
  • Your own ordering page, so regulars can order direct instead of through a delivery app that takes roughly 13–33% commission plus VAT.

Menuthere covers the ordering part. Customers order on your own page or by QR code, with no app to download. Orders ring on your phone or tablet and can print a kitchen ticket. There is 0% commission on every plan, and you can tag allergens and calories on every dish, even on Free. Card payments go through your own Stripe account on Lite and above (Stripe charges 1.5% + 20p for standard UK cards).

takeaway ordering system

UK rules every QSR owner should know

  • Planning. In England, a hot food takeaway is "sui generis" for planning, so it has its own class. Restaurants and cafés sit in Class E. Switching a shop to a takeaway needs planning permission. This has been the case since 1 September 2020. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules, so check with your council.
  • Food registration. Register with your council at least 28 days before you open.
  • VAT. Hot takeaway food is standard-rated at 20%. Most cold takeaway food is zero-rated. See our guide to VAT on takeaway food.
  • Allergens. You must give allergen information for the 14 allergens, including for online and phone orders.
  • Calorie labels. In England, businesses with 250 or more employees must show calories on menus. Most independents are exempt.
  • No card surcharges. You cannot charge consumers extra for paying by card. Build the fee into your prices.

QSR, takeaway or dark kitchen?

A takeaway is a type of QSR. A dark kitchen is a kitchen with no shop front that only cooks for delivery. Many QSR brands now run all three: a shop, a drive-thru and a delivery-only kitchen.

FAQs

What does QSR stand for?

QSR stands for quick service restaurant. It means a food business where you order and pay at a counter, kiosk or app and get your food in minutes.

What is a QSR restaurant in the UK?

It is a fast food or counter-service outlet. Examples include McDonald's, Greggs, KFC, Subway and most independent chippies, kebab shops and pizza takeaways.

Is a takeaway a QSR?

Yes. A takeaway sells food quickly for people to eat elsewhere, so it fits the QSR meaning. Many takeaways also deliver.

What is the difference between QSR and fast casual?

Both are counter-service. Fast casual food is fresher and made to order, the room is nicer and the bill is higher. QSR is faster and cheaper.

Is Nando's fast casual or casual dining?

It sits between the two. You order and pay at the counter, but food comes to your table and people stay to eat. Many people call it fast casual, though sources classify it differently.

Is Starbucks a QSR?

Coffee chains are often counted as QSRs because you order at the counter and get your drink in minutes. Industry reports usually include coffee shops in the QSR market.

What technology does a quick service restaurant need?

A till or EPOS, a card machine, a kitchen printer or screen, and a way for customers to order ahead. Phone ordering by web or QR code cuts queues without the cost of a kiosk.
