Abandoned cart reminder: what it is for a restaurant and when to send one

Updated October 20, 2026

An abandoned cart reminder is a message to a customer who put dishes in an online cart but didn't finish the order. It lists what they picked and links straight back to checkout. For a restaurant it has to come quickly, within minutes, because hunger doesn't wait a day. On WhatsApp, Meta treats it as a marketing message, even if the customer asked for it.

In short

  • Trigger: items in the cart, no order placed, a set time passed.
  • Timing: minutes for food, not the 24-hour gap retail stores use.
  • On WhatsApp it's marketing (Meta calls it retargeting), so it costs the marketing rate and needs opt-in.
  • Inside an open 24-hour chat you can send it as a normal message instead of a template.
  • In the US, Meta doesn't deliver marketing templates to +1 numbers, so the template version won't arrive; WhatsApp sends order updates (utility, about US$0.0034 each), not promotions. Use email for offers.

Why carts get abandoned in a restaurant

A customer builds a dinner order, then a phone call comes in, the delivery fee surprises them, the card form asks too much, or they wait for a friend to choose. Some of those are fixable at the checkout itself (showing fees early, fewer form fields, pay by card or cash). A reminder catches the rest.

Food vs retail: timing is different

Retail storeRestaurant
When the need endsDays or weeksUsually within the hour
Typical first reminderHours later, often the next day5–30 minutes later
Second reminderCommonRarely worth it the same evening
What the message says"Still thinking about it?""Your order is one tap away, kitchen open till 10"
Discount in the reminderCommonOften unnecessary; it trains customers to wait

These are general practice observations, not measured benchmarks.

The WhatsApp rules

Meta's template categorization lists a message like "You left items in your cart! Checkout now" as retargeting, and says retargeting messages are marketing even if the user requested them. That has three effects:

  1. Price: a cart-reminder template is charged at the marketing rate, for example US$0.0635 to a UK number against US$0.022 for a utility message (Meta's rate card from 1 October 2026).
  2. Opt-in: send it only to customers who agreed to marketing messages. See WhatsApp opt-in.
  3. No US delivery: the template doesn't reach US (+1) numbers.

The exception is the 24-hour window: if the customer messaged you in the last 24 hours, a normal chat message can carry the reminder, no template needed. More: is an abandoned cart reminder marketing or utility?

A worked example: what recovery is worth

A pizzeria outside the US sees 120 abandoned WhatsApp carts a month at an average of US$34. It reminds them 10 minutes later.

  • If 1 in 6 come back, that's 20 orders, US$680 of sales.
  • Messages: 120 marketing templates to UK numbers × US$0.0635 = US$7.62, or less if many were sent as chat messages inside an open window.

The 1-in-6 return rate is an assumption for the arithmetic, not a benchmark. Your real rate is the number to watch.

How Menuthere handles abandoned cart reminders

  • A ready-made flow. On the Pro plan (US$39 a month), add Abandoned cart from Flows → Global flows → Recover sales and switch it on.
  • You choose the wait. Send after defaults to 10 minutes and can be set from 5 minutes to 24 hours.
  • The button rebuilds the cart. The message lists the items and total, with a Complete order button that refills the cart and opens checkout.
  • Chat inside the window, template outside. The flow sends a normal message when the 24-hour window is open and a Meta-approved template when it isn't. Menuthere submits the template for review when you switch the flow on; until it's approved, only customers inside the window get a reminder.
  • No nagging. No reminder goes to someone who ordered meanwhile, replied STOP, was reminded in the last 12 hours, or whose number isn't confirmed yet, or while your store is closed.

What it doesn't do: Menuthere doesn't send cart reminders by email or SMS. The customer finishes the order on your ordering page, not inside WhatsApp. See abandoned cart reminders.

FAQs

What is an abandoned cart reminder?

It is a message to a customer who added items to an online cart but didn't place the order. It shows what they chose and links back to checkout so they can finish in one tap.

Is a WhatsApp abandoned cart reminder a marketing message?

Yes. Meta classifies "you left items in your cart" messages as retargeting, which counts as marketing even if the customer asked for it. It is charged at the marketing rate and needs opt-in, and the template version is not delivered to US phone numbers.

When should a restaurant send an abandoned cart reminder?

Soon, usually within minutes. Food decisions don't last as long as shopping decisions. Menuthere's default is 10 minutes after the cart is left, and you can choose anything from 5 minutes to 24 hours.

Can I send a cart reminder without a WhatsApp template?

Yes, if the customer messaged you in the last 24 hours. Inside that window you can send a normal chat message. Outside it you need an approved marketing template.
