Customer lifetime value (CLV): what a regular is really worth
Updated October 20, 2026
Customer lifetime value (CLV or LTV) is the total a customer spends with you over the whole time they keep ordering. For a restaurant, a simple version is: average order value × orders per month × months as a customer. A regular who spends $24 twice a month for 18 months is worth $864 in sales.
In short
- CLV = AOV × orders per month × months as a customer. Multiply by your gross margin for profit CLV.
- CLV vs AOV: AOV is one order; CLV is the whole relationship.
- Use it to decide what a customer is worth winning or keeping, for example how big a welcome offer can be.
- On Menuthere each customer's page shows lifetime spend, average order and orders a month (Lite).
The formula
CLV (revenue) = average order value × orders per month × months as a customer
CLV (gross profit) = CLV (revenue) × gross margin
Estimate "months as a customer" from your own history: how long customers who order more than once usually keep ordering. If you don't know yet, use a conservative guess and update it.
A worked regular
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Average order value | $24 |
| Orders per month | 2 |
| Months as a customer | 18 |
| CLV (revenue) | 24 × 2 × 18 = $864 |
| Gross margin after food cost | 65% |
| CLV (gross profit) | 864 × 0.65 = $561.60 |
(Illustrative figures.)
Why it matters: the same regular on a delivery app
If those 36 orders come through a delivery app at a 25% commission, the restaurant pays 864 × 0.25 = $216 in commission over the 18 months. Moving that one regular to your own ordering page keeps most of that. Multiply by your number of regulars to see why the channel of repeat orders matters. See third-party delivery.
What CLV is for
| Decision | How CLV helps |
|---|---|
| Size of a welcome offer | A $5 first-order discount is small against $561 of profit, if new customers become regulars |
| Loyalty rewards | Points worth 2% of spend cost about $17 on a $864 customer; see loyalty points |
| Win-back spend | A lapsed regular is worth a stronger offer than a one-time customer; see win-back campaign |
| Channel choice | Commission on repeat orders eats CLV directly |
Three levers on CLV
- Order value (bigger baskets): sizes, add-ons and suggestions.
- Frequency (more orders a month): reminders, loyalty, a reason to come back.
- Lifetime (more months): consistent food and service, and catching customers before they lapse. See RFM segmentation and repeat customer rate.
How Menuthere shows customer value
- Each customer's page (Lite). Orders, Lifetime spend, Average order, Orders a month (a dash until there's a month of history) and Last order, plus their six most-ordered dishes.
- The customer list. Avg order per customer, Avg amount per customer and Ordered again, the share of buyers who ordered more than once.
- VIPs (Pro). The VIP segment is the top 10% of customers by lifetime spend who have ordered twice or more and recently.
- Matched by phone. A guest order and a signed-in order from the same phone show together on the customer's page.
What it doesn't do: Menuthere doesn't predict future lifetime value or show a CLV figure; it shows the actual spend so far. Use the formula above with your own averages.

FAQs
What is customer lifetime value for a restaurant?
It is the total a customer spends with the restaurant over the whole time they keep ordering. A simple estimate is average order value times orders per month times the number of months they stay a customer.
How do you calculate customer lifetime value?
Multiply the average order value by the number of orders per month and by the months a customer typically stays. For example, $24 × 2 orders a month × 18 months is $864. Multiply by your gross margin to get the profit version.
What is the difference between CLV and AOV?
Average order value is what a customer spends on one order. Customer lifetime value is what they spend across all their orders over time, so it also depends on how often they order and for how long.
Why does customer lifetime value matter for delivery apps?
Because commission is charged on every order, including repeat ones. A regular worth $864 in sales costs $216 in commission at 25% if every order goes through an app, which is why restaurants move regulars to their own ordering.
Does Menuthere show customer lifetime value?
It shows each customer's actual lifetime spend, average order and orders a month on their customer page, from the Lite plan. It does not predict future value.
