AEO for restaurants: how to get recommended by ChatGPT, Google AI and Copilot

Updated October 20, 2026

AEO (answer engine optimization) for a restaurant means making sure that when someone asks ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot or Claude "where should I get ramen tonight?", the AI can find your restaurant, trust its facts, and cite you. The engines' own documentation says the same thing: there's no secret file or special markup. Be crawlable and indexed in both Google and Bing, keep your name, address, phone and hours identical everywhere, publish your menu as text, earn genuine reviews on the sites AI reads, and answer real questions on your own site.

In short

  • Google says you don't need "AI text files" or special markup for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
  • Copilot answers come from Bing, and Bing recommends Bing Places for local businesses. Many restaurants never claim it.
  • Allow the search crawlers: OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search), PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Bingbot and Googlebot.
  • Major AI crawlers don't run JavaScript, so a menu drawn by code can be invisible to them. Use HTML text.
  • llms.txt is a proposal, not a standard. Google Search doesn't use it, and no AI engine documents using it to choose which restaurants to cite.

Updated October 2026. Engine behavior changes often; every claim below links to the engine's own documentation.

AEO, GEO and SEO: what's the difference for a restaurant?

TermWhere you want to appearWhat drives it
SEOGoogle and Bing results, the Maps packBusiness Profile, website, reviews, links
AEO (answer engine optimization)Direct answers: AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice assistantsThe same, plus clear answer-first text
GEO (generative engine optimization)Chat answers in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini, ClaudeThe same, plus crawler access to each engine's index

Google's 2026 guide on generative AI features puts it plainly: optimizing for generative AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." So start with the restaurant SEO guide, then add the AI-specific steps below.

Where each AI engine gets restaurant answers

EngineWhere its web answers come fromWhat you control
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeGoogle's Search index. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippetBe indexed; don't block snippets; your Business Profile
Microsoft CopilotBing. Bing's AI Performance report counts citations in Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and select partnersBing indexing, Bing Places, IndexNow
ChatGPT searchOpenAI's OAI-SearchBot index (sites that block it aren't shown in ChatGPT search answers)Allow OAI-SearchBot
PerplexityPerplexityBot's index, plus live fetches by Perplexity-UserAllow PerplexityBot
ClaudeClaude-SearchBot's index, plus live fetches by Claude-UserAllow Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User

What all five share: they cite pages they can read, and they cross-check facts. If Google says you close at 10 pm, Yelp says 9 pm and your website says 11 pm, an AI has no reason to trust any of them.

Step 1: Let the right crawlers in

Each AI company documents its crawlers. The ones that decide whether you can be cited are the search crawlers:

CrawlerCompanyWhat it doesObeys robots.txt?
GooglebotGoogleSearch, including AI Overviews and AI ModeYes
BingbotMicrosoftBing search and Copilot answersYes
OAI-SearchBotOpenAISurfaces sites in ChatGPT search; changes take about 24 hoursYes
PerplexityBotPerplexityPerplexity search results; "not used to crawl content for AI foundation models"Yes (Perplexity tells you to manage it in robots.txt)
Claude-SearchBotAnthropicIndexes pages for Claude's search resultsYes
ChatGPT-User, Perplexity-User, Claude-UsereachFetch a page live when a user asks; Perplexity says its user fetcher "generally ignores" robots.txtVaries
GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended (a token)eachModel training; Google says Google-Extended doesn't affect inclusion in Google SearchYes

Blocking a training crawler doesn't remove you from AI search. Blocking a search crawler does: OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers".

A robots.txt that allows search and AI crawlers while keeping private areas closed looks like this (adapt the Disallow lines to your site):

User-agent: *
Allow: /
Disallow: /admin/

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
Allow: /

Sitemap: https://www.example.com/sitemap.xml

Check your firewall too. Some hosting and CDN security settings block AI crawlers by default. If your robots.txt allows them but your host's bot protection blocks them, the block wins. Look for an "AI crawlers" or "bot" setting in your host or CDN dashboard.

Step 2: Get indexed in Bing, not just Google

Copilot is grounded on Bing, and Bing is the easiest index for a small restaurant to get into on purpose:

  1. Claim Bing Places for Business (you can import from your Google Business Profile). Bing's own advice for local businesses being cited in AI answers is to keep address, hours and contact details current in Bing Places.
  2. Verify your website in Bing Webmaster Tools (it can import from Google Search Console) and submit your sitemap. Bing asks that each URL's lastmod date reflects when the content actually changed, not when the sitemap was generated.
  3. Use IndexNow if your website platform supports it. It tells Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam, Yep and Amazon about new or changed pages, up to 10,000 URLs per submission. Google doesn't take part.
  4. Watch the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools (public preview since 10 February 2026). It shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and select partners, and which pages. Bing notes the numbers don't indicate ranking or placement.

Step 3: Make your facts identical everywhere (worked example)

AI answers lean on the same listings people use: your website, Google, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp and Tripadvisor. Inconsistent facts are the most common reason an AI gets a restaurant wrong. Here's an audit of a made-up taqueria, done in 20 minutes with a browser:

MenuPDFPhoto of menu——Old photoPublish a text menu; link it everywhere

The business is made up; 555-0100 to 555-0199 numbers are reserved for fiction.

After the fixes, every source agrees on name, phone and hours, and every order link points at one place. Use our guide to put your own order link first on Google.

Step 4: Publish your menu as text, in the HTML

People ask AI about dishes ("best birria near me", "vegan pho in Portland", "gluten-free pizza that delivers"). An AI can only match you if it can read your dishes.

  • Use HTML text with names, short descriptions and prices. A menu photo can't be read by most crawlers, and a PDF is a separate file with no context.
  • Don't rely on JavaScript. Vercel's measurements (December 2024) found that "none of the major AI crawlers currently render JavaScript", including GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. If your menu only appears after code runs in the browser, those crawlers see an empty page. Test it: open your menu page, choose "View page source", and search for a dish name.
  • Mark dietary facts in words: "vegan", "gluten-free", "halal", "contains peanuts". These are exactly what people ask AI about.
  • Add Restaurant structured data (example in the restaurant SEO guide). Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features but still recommends structured data for rich results. Bing's team has said schema helps its systems understand content. Keep it accurate and matching the visible page.

Step 5: Answer the questions guests actually ask

AI engines quote pages that answer a question directly. Add a short FAQ to your website, written answer-first, with facts only you know:

  • Do you take reservations? For how many people?
  • Do you deliver, and how far? Is there a delivery fee?
  • Is there parking? Is the entrance step-free?
  • Which dishes are vegan, gluten-free or halal?
  • Do you cater? How much notice do you need?
  • Are kids welcome? Is there a kids' menu?

Bing's advice for being cited includes clear headings, tables and FAQ sections, examples and data, and keeping content current. Google's AI guide asks for "non-commodity content that's helpful, reliable, and people-first".

What not to do: don't create dozens of near-identical pages for every phrasing ("best tacos in Austin", "top tacos Austin", "Austin taco places"). Google's AI guide says making pages for "every possible variation" or "fan-out queries" mainly to influence rankings or AI answers violates its scaled content abuse policy. One good page beats twenty thin ones.

Step 6: Earn reviews and mentions on the sites AI reads

AI answers about "the best [dish] in [city]" draw heavily on third-party sources: review sites, local news, food creators and lists. You can't buy your way in, but you can earn it:

  • Ask every guest for a review on Google and Yelp. Never ask only happy guests (Google bans selectively soliciting positive reviews) and never offer anything in return. A Google review QR code on tables and bags makes asking easy.
  • Get covered locally: openings, a new chef, a give-back night, an award. Local news and food blogs are the kind of independent sources AI engines cite.
  • Skip fake mentions. Google's AI guide says "seeking inauthentic 'mentions' across the web isn't as helpful as it might seem", and the FTC bans fake reviews.

What llms.txt does, and what it doesn't

llms.txt is a Markdown file at your site's root that lists your most useful pages for AI tools. It was proposed by Jeremy Howard on 3 September 2024 at llmstxt.org.

What the facts say (October 2026):

  • It's a proposal, not a standard. The only required part is an H1 with your site's name; a blockquote summary and H2 lists of links are recommended.
  • Google Search doesn't use it. Google's AI optimization guide says you don't need "machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown" to appear in Google Search, that Search "itself doesn't use them", and that it's fine to keep one for other services.
  • No AI search engine documents using llms.txt to decide which restaurants to cite. OpenAI's and Perplexity's crawler pages describe robots.txt controls, not llms.txt. The proposal itself says it's mainly meant for AI agents to read on demand while helping a user.
  • It doesn't control crawling. Blocking and allowing bots is robots.txt's job.

Verdict for a restaurant: optional and low-impact. If your website platform makes it easy, a five-line file does no harm:

# Casa Lupita Taqueria

> Family-run taqueria at 100 Main Street, Springfield, IL. Open Tue–Sun 11 am–9 pm. Pickup and delivery within 3 miles.

## Key pages
- [Menu with prices](https://www.example.com/menu): tacos, birria, vegan options, allergens
- [Order online](https://www.example.com/order): pickup and delivery
- [Catering](https://www.example.com/catering): trays for 10–100 people, 48 hours' notice

Spend your first hours on Steps 1–6, not on this file.

Check your AI visibility every month

There's no complete dashboard for AI answers yet, so combine what exists:

  1. Bing Webmaster Tools → AI Performance: citations in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, by page.
  2. Google Search Console: clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the normal Performance report (search type "Web").
  3. A 10-minute prompt test. Once a month, ask ChatGPT (with search), Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode the same five questions from your area, and write down whether you appear and which source is cited:
    • "Best [your cuisine] in [your neighborhood]"
    • "[Your dish] near [landmark] open now"
    • "Where can I get [dietary need] [cuisine] in [city]?"
    • "[Your restaurant name] hours" and "[your restaurant name] menu"
    • "Restaurants in [city] that deliver [dish]"
  4. Fix what you find. Wrong hours usually trace back to one stale listing. If a competitor is cited from a local article, that's the kind of mention to earn.
  5. Run the free restaurant health check after big changes. It checks your Google listing, website, phone speed, ordering and menu format.

How Menuthere helps with AI search

  • Your menu as HTML for search and AI crawlers. Menuthere storefronts give crawlers such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot and GPTBot a plain-HTML version of your store: your name as the main heading, then every category, dish, description and price.
  • Allergens and calories on each dish, on every plan, including Free.
  • Your own search title and description (Lite, $17 a month, and up) and your own domain (Lite and up).
  • Push your menu to Google Business Profile (Lite and up), so your Google listing and your ordering page show the same dishes and prices.
  • One order link for every listing, with 0% commission. The Free plan covers up to 50 orders a month.

Give Google, Bing and AI assistants one menu to read and one link to send people to.

FAQs

What is AEO for restaurants?

AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the work that helps AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot find your restaurant, trust its details and cite it when someone asks for a recommendation. For restaurants it is mostly good local SEO plus crawler access and consistent listings.

How do I get my restaurant recommended by ChatGPT?

Allow OAI-SearchBot in your robots.txt, because OpenAI says sites that block it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Keep your name, address, phone and hours identical on your website and every listing, publish your menu as text, and earn genuine reviews and local mentions.

Does my restaurant need an llms.txt file?

No. Google Search does not use llms.txt, and no AI search engine documents using it to choose which restaurants to cite. It is optional and low-impact. Crawler access, consistent listings and a text menu matter far more.

Why does Copilot matter for a restaurant?

Copilot's web answers come from Bing. Claiming Bing Places, verifying your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and keeping your details current are free, and Bing's AI Performance report shows when your pages are cited.

Do I need special schema markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says there is no special markup or file needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Restaurant structured data is still worth adding for regular search.

Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?

Blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot or ClaudeBot does not remove you from AI search, but blocking search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Claude-SearchBot can keep you out of their answers. Most restaurants benefit from allowing the search crawlers.

Why do AI assistants show the wrong hours for my restaurant?

Usually because one of your listings is out of date. Check your website, Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places and Yelp, and make the name, phone and hours identical on all of them.
