Restaurant SEO: how US restaurants get found on Google (2026 guide)

Updated October 20, 2026

Restaurant SEO is the work that gets your restaurant shown when someone nearby searches "tacos near me" or "best pho in Houston", and then gets them to order from you rather than a delivery app. For an independent, most of it is free: a complete Google Business Profile, a menu written as text on a fast website you own, the same name, address and phone on every listing, Restaurant structured data, and a steady flow of honest reviews. Nobody can pay Google for a better local ranking, so be wary of anyone who sells a "guaranteed top 3".

In short

  • Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. You control relevance and prominence.
  • Put your menu on your website as HTML text, not only as a PDF or a photo.
  • Use one name, address and phone (NAP) on Google, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp and your site.
  • Ask every guest for a review. Never pay for reviews and never ask only the happy ones.
  • Send Google's "Order online" traffic to your own ordering page on your own domain.
  • Check your starting score with the free restaurant health check.

How Google ranks local restaurants

Google's own help page names three factors for local results:

FactorWhat Google meansWhat you can do
RelevanceHow well your Business Profile matches the searchAccurate categories, a full menu, real descriptions of what you serve
DistanceHow far you are from the searcherNothing, except listing every real location
ProminenceHow well known you are, including links and reviewsReviews, ratings, local links and mentions, a good website

Google adds that "more reviews and positive ratings can help" and that there's "no way to request or pay for a better local ranking". Ads are a separate product. See can I pay Google to rank higher on Maps?

There are two places to win: the map pack (the map and three listings, driven mostly by your Business Profile) and the regular results under it (your website, plus Yelp, Tripadvisor and delivery apps). Restaurant SEO means working on both.

Start with your score: a worked example

The free restaurant health check reads your public Google listing and your website and scores 8 things out of 100: online ordering 25, website 15, phone speed 15, menu 10, rating 10, reviews 10, photos 10, opening hours 5. If a check can't run (for example, your website turns the visit away), it's left out and the score is worked out over the checks that did run.

Here's how a typical independent might score, and what fixing three things does. (The restaurant is illustrative; the points are the grader's real rules.)

CheckBeforePointsAfter the fixesPoints
Website on your Google listingOwn website15 / 15Same15 / 15

Opening hoursSet5 / 5Same5 / 5
Photos6 photos6 / 1010 or more photos10 / 10
Score62 / 10088 / 100

The three fixes (own ordering, a text menu, four more photos) are each an afternoon's work. The rest of this guide shows how.

Step 1: Complete your Google Business Profile

Your Business Profile drives the map pack. Follow Google's guidelines exactly:

  • Name: your real-world name, as on your sign and receipts. No keywords, locations or taglines ("Regal Pizzeria", not "Regal Pizzeria Best Pizza Downtown"). Keyword stuffing can get a profile suspended.
  • Categories: "as specific as possible, but representative of your main business": "Mexican restaurant" or "Pizza delivery", with as few secondary categories as you need.
  • Hours: regular hours, plus special hours for Thanksgiving, Christmas, July 4 and other holidays.
  • Menu, photos and order link: add your menu, at least 10 real photos, and a link to your own ordering page. See how to add an Order online button and why you can't always edit the menu on Google.
  • Delivery-only (ghost kitchen) brands: Google says they must set a service area and hide their address.

Step 2: Put your menu on your website as text

Your website backs up your Business Profile, and it's where your own ordering should live.

  • Write the menu as HTML text, with prices. Google can index PDFs, but a PDF has to download and be zoomed on a phone, nobody can order from it, and the health check scores it 5 out of 10 against 10 for text. A menu that's only a photo scores 4. Text also matches what people search for ("birria tacos", "gluten-free pizza").
  • Write clear page titles: "Wood-fired pizza in Asheville | Pickup and delivery | Luigi's". Food plus town.
  • Show your name, address and phone in the footer of every page, written exactly as on Google.
  • Keep ordering on your own domain. If "Order online" sends people to a delivery app, the app gets the customer data and the commission, and your site doesn't get the visit. See why Google may show a delivery app instead of your website.
  • One page per location if you have more than one, each with its own address, hours and map.

If you don't have a website yet, compare options in our best website builders for restaurants.

Step 3: Make it fast on a phone

Google's Core Web Vitals measure real visitors' experience. Aim for "good" at the 75th percentile of page loads, on mobile and desktop:

MetricWhat it measuresGood
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)How fast the main content (often your hero photo) appears2.5 seconds or less
INP (Interaction to Next Paint)How fast the page responds to a tap200 milliseconds or less
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)How much the page jumps around while loading0.1 or less

Quick wins for restaurant sites: compress photos (a 4 MB hero photo is the most common LCP problem), drop auto-playing video headers, and remove pop-ups that cover the menu on a phone. Test with Google's PageSpeed Insights, or run the health check, which uses Google's mobile speed test.

Step 4: Add Restaurant structured data

Structured data (schema markup) tells search engines the facts about your restaurant in a fixed format. It doesn't guarantee better rankings, but it makes your name, address, hours and menu unambiguous. Google's local business documentation requires name and address, recommends servesCuisine, menu, telephone, url, priceRange, geo and openingHoursSpecification, and says to use the most specific type (here, Restaurant). Schema.org's newer hasMenu property can carry the same menu URL.

Here's an example for a made-up US restaurant. Replace every value with your own:

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Restaurant",
  "name": "Luigi's Pizzeria",
  "url": "https://www.example.com/",
  "telephone": "+1-555-010-0123",
  "servesCuisine": "Italian",
  "priceRange": "$$",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "streetAddress": "100 Main Street",
    "addressLocality": "Springfield",
    "addressRegion": "IL",
    "postalCode": "62701",
    "addressCountry": "US"
  },
  "openingHoursSpecification": [
    {
      "@type": "OpeningHoursSpecification",
      "dayOfWeek": ["Tuesday", "Wednesday", "Thursday", "Friday", "Saturday", "Sunday"],
      "opens": "16:00",
      "closes": "22:00"
    }
  ],
  "menu": "https://www.example.com/menu",
  "hasMenu": "https://www.example.com/menu"
}
</script>

The business is made up; 555-0100 to 555-0199 numbers are reserved for fiction. Three rules:

  1. Mark up only what's visible on the page. Hours in the schema must match the hours on the site.
  2. Don't add star ratings about yourself. Google says a business that controls reviews about itself (even through an embedded widget) is ineligible for review stars on pages with LocalBusiness markup.
  3. Test it in Google's Rich Results Test before publishing. Note that Google's Restaurant carousel is limited to a small set of providers, so don't expect a carousel from your own markup.

Step 5: Get listed on the right directories

Directory listings ("citations") help search engines and AI assistants confirm you're real and local. Use the exact same NAP everywhere.

ListingWhy it matters in the US
Google Business ProfileGoogle Search and Maps
Apple Business ConnectApple Maps, Siri and Spotlight on iPhones
Bing Places for BusinessBing search, and Microsoft Copilot answers for local questions
YelpRanks for "best [dish] in [city]"; widely used for restaurant research
TripadvisorTourist areas and "best restaurants in [town]" searches
Facebook pageShows in brand searches; many guests check it for hours
Reservation platforms (if you take bookings)They rank for "[restaurant] reservations"
Delivery apps (if you use them)They rank well; keep the details matching

Ten accurate listings beat fifty messy ones. Fix old addresses and phone numbers first.

Step 6: Build reviews the honest way (never gate them)

Reviews feed prominence, and guests read them. The rules are strict:

  • Ask every guest, at the right moment: at the counter, on the receipt, on a Google review QR code on tables and bags.
  • Never "gate" reviews. Google's policy bans merchants from discouraging negative reviews or selectively soliciting positive reviews, which is exactly what "only send happy customers to Google" tools do. It also bans asking staff to collect a set number of reviews.
  • Never offer anything for a review. Google bans incentives for any review. The FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule (in force since 21 October 2024) bans fake reviews and incentives conditioned on a positive review, with civil penalties for knowing violations.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, within a few days.

Step 7: Earn local links and mentions

Links and mentions from other local sites show Google that people know you.

  • Local news and "what's new" columns: openings, a new menu, a give-back night, an anniversary.
  • Suppliers: your brewery, roaster or farm may list the restaurants they supply.
  • Sponsorships: Little League, high school sports, 5K runs and festivals often link to sponsors.
  • Local food creators: if the meal is free, the FTC requires them to disclose it clearly.
  • Chamber of commerce and business district sites.

Avoid paid link schemes. They break Google's spam policies.

Step 8: Add useful pages, not doorway pages

Extra pages help when they answer real questions: catering, private events, holiday menus (publish them weeks ahead), allergen information, and a page for each real location. Don't create "Pizza delivery in [every nearby suburb]" pages with swapped names. Google treats them as doorway pages, which is spam. One good delivery-area page works better.

Track whether it's working

  • Google Business Profile performance: searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks.
  • Google Search Console (free): the searches that show your website and the clicks you get.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools (free): Bing search data, plus an AI Performance report that shows when your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot answers.
  • A tagged link: add a UTM tag to the website link on your Business Profile so your analytics show how many orders start on Google.
  • Orders per channel, weekly. If local SEO is working, direct orders go up.

How Menuthere helps with restaurant SEO

  • A menu search engines can read. Search and AI crawlers (such as Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot) get a plain-HTML version of your store: your restaurant's name as the main heading, then every category with its dishes, descriptions and prices, following the same visibility rules customers see.
  • Your own search title, description and share image (Lite, $17 a month, and up), plus your own Google Analytics 4 or Meta Pixel ID, in Settings → Branding → SEO and tracking.
  • Your own domain (Lite and up), such as order.yourrestaurant.com.
  • Push your menu to your Google Business Profile with dishes, prices and photos (Lite and up). Each push replaces the menu on Google, so check your listing afterwards.
  • Allergens and calories on every dish, on every plan, including Free.
  • 0% commission on direct orders, so the customers Google sends you stay yours. The Free plan covers up to 50 orders a month.

FAQs

What is restaurant SEO?

Restaurant SEO is the work that gets your restaurant shown in Google Search and Maps when people nearby look for food, and turns those searches into visits and orders. It covers your Google Business Profile, your website and menu, your listings on other sites, and your reviews.

How do I get my restaurant to the top of Google Maps?

Complete your Business Profile with a specific category, accurate hours, a menu, photos and your own order link. Keep the same name, address and phone everywhere, ask every guest for a review, and earn local links. Distance to the searcher also matters, and you can't change that.

Can I pay Google to rank my restaurant higher?

No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. You can buy ads, which are labeled as ads and are separate from the local ranking.

Is a PDF menu bad for SEO?

Google can index PDFs, but a PDF menu is slow to open on a phone and nobody can order from it. A menu written as text on your website, with prices, is better for guests and search engines. Keep the PDF only as a printable extra.

Do I need schema markup for my restaurant website?

It isn't required, but Restaurant structured data with your name, address, hours, cuisine and menu link makes your details unambiguous to search engines. Mark up only what is visible on the page and test it before publishing.

Is it OK to ask only happy customers for Google reviews?

No. Google's policy bans selectively soliciting positive reviews and discouraging negative ones. Ask every guest, offer nothing in return, and reply to every review.

How long does restaurant SEO take?

Business Profile fixes such as hours, photos and an order link can show up within days. Reviews and links build over months. Check your Business Profile performance and Search Console monthly.
