How do I stop strangers adding my restaurant number to WhatsApp groups?
Updated 12 October 2026
By default WhatsApp lets any user add you to groups. Change it in your privacy settings, or switch on Strict account settings so only known contacts or a chosen list can.
- Default: any user can add you to groups until you change the setting in privacy.
- Strict account settings: an optional lockdown mode. Only known contacts or a more selective list can add you.
- Strict account settings can only be turned on or off from your primary device.
- If someone not in your contacts adds you, you can choose to stay or leave the group.
- Calls: under Privacy, Calls, you can turn on Silence unknown callers.
Keep your order number out of public groups
Menuthere sends order updates to each customer one to one, and its broadcasts go to customers who have ordered. Your order number never has to sit in a public group.
