Online ordering for fast casual restaurants: bowls at lunch speed
Updated October 20, 2026
Online ordering for a fast casual restaurant has to do three things: take a build-your-own order with every choice spelled out, keep up at 12:15 PM, and grow with you from one location to several. With Menuthere, base and protein are required choices, toppings are capped, and the ticket prints every line. Customers pick a pickup time and pay into your own Stripe account, with no commission. Calories show on each item on every plan, and a head office on Pro runs several locations from one login. The Free plan takes 50 orders a month; Lite, at $17 a month, adds unlimited orders, card payments and pickup slots.
In short
- The bowl builder. Base required, protein required, toppings up to 5, sauces up to 2, double protein at its price.
- Lunch at speed. Rolling slots spread orders across "now + 15" and "now + 30"; auto-accept and auto-print keep tickets moving.
- Calories on every item. Shown to customers on every plan. At 20 or more locations, FDA rules also require two statements on your online menu; Menuthere doesn't add them for you.
- One login over every store. A head office (Pro) shows every location's sales and orders, and a new location can copy an existing menu.
The bowl build sheet
Fast casual menus are assembly lines. Online, every station becomes a choice group.
| Station | Example | How you set it up in Menuthere |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Bowl $11.95, burrito $11.95, salad $11.45, kids' bowl $7.50 | Separate items, or sizes on one item |
| Base | Cilantro-lime rice, brown rice, greens, half and half | Add-on group, single choice, Required |
| Protein | Chicken, steak +$2.00, carnitas, tofu, double protein +$4.00 | Single choice, required; or multiple "Up to 2" with More than one of each on, so double chicken reads "Chicken ×2" |
| Toppings | Beans, corn salsa, pico, cheese, lettuce, pickled onion | Multiple, Up to 5, free |
| Premium | Guacamole +$2.50, queso +$1.75 | Multiple, "Up to 2" |
| Sauces | Chipotle, salsa verde, tahini | Multiple, "Up to 2" |
| Sides and drinks | Chips, agua fresca | Their own items, suggested when a bowl goes in the cart |
| Breakfast | Breakfast burritos 7 to 10:30 AM | Set Time on the dish |
Everything above is on the Free plan. On the customer's screen each group shows its rule ("Required · choose 1", "Optional · up to 5 in total"). Each option's price is added once per pick. The kitchen ticket shows the item, every choice and the customer's note, with no prices.
Lunch throughput, 11:45 AM to 1:15 PM
| Problem at noon | Menuthere setting | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Twenty orders land at 12:02 | Rolling slots: every 15 minutes, 2 slots; customers pick "now + 15" or "now + 30" | Lite |
| Office group orders | Fixed time ranges, booked the day before | Lite |
| Orders due soon get lost | Prepare now box in Prebookings, with a countdown for each order due within the hour | Lite |
| Nobody free to tap Accept | Auto-accept after 30 seconds to 2 minutes of ringing, with automatic printing | Free |
| Customers expect a time | Average takeaway time at checkout, such as 12 minutes; raise it when you're slammed | Free |
| Out of steak | Switch the steak bowl off in one tap; an add-on option has no switch, so remove steak from the Protein group until it's back | Free |
| Make line or expo printer | Kitchen ticket (KOT) and bill print as separate jobs from the Windows app | Free |
There's no automatic cap on orders per slot. If a slot fills, raise the average time customers see or close online ordering for a few minutes with the Open/Closed switch.
Calories and FDA menu labeling
Every Menuthere plan lets you add calories and the 14 allergens to each item. Customers see them when they open the item, and the Diner layout shows a short line such as "640 kcal · 3 allergens" on the menu itself.
That matters most when you grow. FDA's menu labeling rule, 21 CFR 101.11, applies to a "covered establishment": a restaurant that is part of a chain with 20 or more locations doing business under the same name and offering substantially the same menu items. Its definition of a menu explicitly includes "menus on the Internet". Covered restaurants must, among other things:
| FDA requirement | What Menuthere does | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Calories for each standard menu item on the menu | Shows the kcal you enter on each item, on every plan | Enter accurate calories for every item, including each format |
| The statement "2,000 calories a day is used for general nutrition advice, but calorie needs vary." | Doesn't add it for you | Add it yourself, for example in the announcement bar (Lite, up to 100 characters) or on your landing page |
| "Additional nutrition information available upon request." on all forms of the menu | Doesn't add it for you | Add it to your landing page or menu descriptions |
| Written nutrition information on request | Not generated | Keep it at the counter and on your website |
The announcement bar fits one line of up to 100 characters, and it doesn't show in the Default and Sidebar menu layouts, so pick a layout that shows it. Calories for build-your-own items are harder: one approach is calories per base and per protein in the option names. Read our FDA menu labeling requirements guide, and check with your own adviser. Restaurants under 20 locations can register to follow the rule voluntarily.
From one location to several
On Pro, a head office sits over all your locations.
- One login, every store. The head office shows today's sales for each location, all their orders, analytics, settlements and bills, and opens any location's dashboard in one press.
- Each location stays separate. Every branch keeps its own login, menu, orders and plan (Free, Lite or Pro), so a manager runs their own store.
- New store, same menu. Adding a branch can copy an existing branch's categories and dishes, every dish switched on. The new branch copies the logo, colors, currency and time zone of your first location.
- A brand page with an outlet picker lets customers choose their location before they order.
Tax, tips and the bill
Menuthere labels the tax line Sales tax for US stores. You set your store's rate, and outside India a dish can have its own tax rate, for example 0% on an item your state doesn't tax. On a mixed bill, each rate gets its own line. Tips are optional at checkout on the standard checkout: No tip is selected until the customer picks 10%, 15%, 20% or a custom amount, and tips are never taxed. Check your state's rules for what's taxable; Menuthere applies the rates you enter.
What it costs: a worked example
One location takes 1,200 online orders a month at $14 ($16,800). Half are delivery, half pickup.
| Channel | Rate | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| DoorDash, Plus plan: 600 delivery at 25% + 600 pickup at 6% | 25% / 6% | $2,100 + $504 = $2,604 |
| Uber Eats, Plus plan: 600 delivery at 25% + 600 pickup at 7% | 25% / 7% | $2,100 + $588 = $2,688 |
| Menuthere Lite + Stripe, all 1,200 orders by card | $17 + 2.9% + 30¢ | $17 + $487.20 + $360.00 = $864.20 |
With your own ordering you carry the delivery: your drivers' pay, or Uber couriers on your own Uber Direct account, where the customer pays Uber's live fee at checkout. Five locations at this volume pay each location's own plan, not a share of sales. App rates are from our DoorDash and Uber Eats pages and the US commission hub.
Costs are still rising. BLS's consumer price index for food away from home was 3.5% higher in September 2026 than a year earlier, and the median wage for restaurant cooks was $17.98 an hour in May 2025. Re-price with the menu price calculator; our guide on how to price menu items walks through it.
Not a fit if
- You need kiosks or a drive-through. Menuthere has no kiosk mode or drive-through flow.
- Your POS must receive web orders. There's no ready-made link to Square, Toast or Clover. Orders arrive in the Menuthere dashboard and print from there.
- You need automatic driver dispatch. Your own drivers are assigned with one tap on the order (Pro); there's no auto-assign or route planning.
- You need the FDA statements added automatically. Add them yourself as described above.

Frequently asked questions
Can customers build their own bowl online?
Yes. Each item can have required groups for the base and protein, capped groups for toppings and sauces, and priced extras such as guacamole. Double protein can be a priced option or a second pick of the same protein.
How do I handle the lunch rush?
On the Lite plan, rolling pickup slots offer times such as 15 and 30 minutes from now, and a Prepare now box lists orders due within the hour. Auto-accept and automatic printing work on every plan.
Does Menuthere show calories on the online menu?
Yes, on every plan. Enter calories on each item and customers see them when they open it, in every menu style. Allergens show the same way.
Does Menuthere meet FDA menu labeling rules for chains?
It shows the calories you enter, but it doesn't add the required 2,000-calorie statement or the statement that more nutrition information is available on request. Chains with 20 or more locations must add those themselves.
Can I run several locations from one account?
Yes, on the Pro plan. A head office shows every location's sales and orders and opens any branch's dashboard. Each branch keeps its own login, menu and plan, and a new branch can copy an existing menu.
Does the bill say sales tax?
Yes. US stores get a tax line called Sales tax. You set the rate, and a dish can have its own rate, such as 0%. A bill with several rates shows a line for each.
Can I connect Menuthere to Toast or Square?
No. There's no ready-made link to Toast, Square or Clover. Orders arrive in the Menuthere dashboard and partner app and print from there.
