WhatsApp ordering for restaurants in Kenya
Updated October 19, 2026
Kenya is one of the cheapest places on Meta's rate card to run WhatsApp ordering. Kenyan numbers aren't priced on their own: Meta groups them into its Rest of Africa region, where an order update costs US$0.004 from October 1, 2026. With Menuthere, your regulars send "Hi" to your own number, tap Order Now, order in shillings and pay by M-Pesa, cash or at pickup. In the Reuters Institute's Digital News Report 2026, 88% of Kenyan respondents used WhatsApp in the past week, more than any other network.
In short
- About US$8 a month in updates for 400 orders, against six figures in shillings on Uber Eats.
- Payment: M-Pesa to your Till or Paybill, cash on delivery, or pay at pickup. Menuthere doesn't confirm mobile-money payments for you, so check each one.
- Your own number on the official WhatsApp Business Platform. Meta bills you directly; Menuthere adds no markup.
- Pro plan (US$39 a month) for WhatsApp ordering and automatic updates.

Meta's prices: Kenya is in "Rest of Africa"
Meta's card has 39 named countries and 8 regions. Kenya (+254) is one of 40 markets in the Rest of Africa region, so it pays that region's rate. Nigeria and South Africa are named separately and cost more. From the USD file "Cost per message in USD on the WhatsApp Business Platform, effective October 1, 2026":
| Category | Kenya (Rest of Africa) | Nigeria | South Africa |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marketing | US$0.0225 | US$0.0516 | US$0.0379 |
| Utility | US$0.004 | US$0.0067 | US$0.0095 |
| Service | US$0.004 | US$0.0067 | US$0.0095 |
How Menuthere's messages fall:
- Order updates are utility templates, billed from the first one at US$0.004.
- The reply to "Hi" is a service message. The first 1,000 each month per business number are free.
- A customer with a Ugandan or Tanzanian number is still on the Rest of Africa rate; a UK visitor's number is charged at the UK rate. See is the price based on my country or my customer's.
Meta has no shilling card, so most Kenyan accounts are billed in US dollars.
M-Pesa, cash and WhatsApp orders
WhatsApp's in-chat business payments don't cover Kenya; WhatsApp's Help Center lists India, Brazil, Mexico and Indonesia only. Menuthere's online checkout outside India uses Stripe, and Stripe doesn't open accounts in Kenya. So:
- M-Pesa to your Till or Paybill. Put the number in your Welcome reply or on the menu. Confirm the payment from your own M-Pesa message before you cook; a forwarded or screenshot message proves nothing. Read how to avoid fake payment screenshots.
- Cash on delivery or pay at pickup, on every plan.
- Record how each order was paid in Menuthere, so the day's totals match your M-Pesa statement.
Uber Eats, Glovo and Bolt Food
| App | What our pages say |
|---|---|
| Uber Eats | 30% when Uber delivers (33% on Uber One orders), 15% if you deliver, 14% for pickup; 16% VAT added to the fee |
| Glovo | Our Uber Eats Kenya page cites Kenya's Competition Authority 2024 study, which put Glovo at about 33% of consumer preference. See Glovo alternatives |

Worked example: a Nairobi nyama choma spot, 400 WhatsApp orders a month
400 orders at KES 1,000 (KES 400,000 a month), Kenyan numbers, USD billing, the "Hi" reply plus five updates per order, paid by M-Pesa or cash.
| Item | Working | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| "Hi" replies (service) | 400, inside the 1,000 free | US$0 |
| Order updates (utility) | 400 × 5 = 2,000 × US$0.004 | US$8.00 |
| One broadcast to 1,000 opted-in customers | 1,000 × US$0.0225 | US$22.50 |
| Payment fees through Menuthere | M-Pesa and cash are outside Menuthere | None |
| Menuthere Pro | US$39 |
The same KES 400,000 on Uber Eats:
| Uber Eats | Fee | 16% VAT | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber delivers (30%) | KES 120,000 | KES 19,200 | KES 139,200 |
| You deliver (15%) | KES 60,000 | KES 9,600 | KES 69,600 |
Your own M-Pesa tariff still applies to payments you receive; check it with Safaricom.
Getting set up in Kenya
- Create your free ordering page, show prices in shillings, and add your VAT number so it shows on the bill.
- Write your menu in English. Swahili isn't one of the menu language button's 13 languages, so write Swahili names into the dish names or descriptions yourself, and edit the WhatsApp replies into Swahili if your customers prefer it.
- Upgrade to Pro (7-day free trial; a card is needed to start, nothing is charged until it ends) and connect your number with Facebook sign-in.
- Complete Meta business verification when you can; it raises your sending limits. See do I need Meta business verification.
- Share a pre-filled "Hi" link from the WhatsApp link generator.
