SkipTheDishes vs DoorDash vs Uber Eats: what each costs a Canadian restaurant
Updated October 20, 2026
For a Canadian restaurant, Uber Eats and DoorDash both publish delivery commissions of 20%, 25% and about 30% depending on the plan, with pickup at 8% to 15%, while SkipTheDishes doesn't publish its rates and sets them in each restaurant's contract. On a C$40 order, that's C$8 to C$12 in commission before tax on the fee, against about C$1.61 in Stripe fees for the same order taken on your own website. In British Columbia, apps serving 500 or more restaurants must offer a 20% base tier.
In short (rates as of October 2026)
- Uber Eats: 20% Lite, 25% Plus, 30% Premium for delivery; 10% pickup with matching in-store prices (15% otherwise); 15% if you deliver yourself.
- DoorDash: 20% Basic, 25% Plus (27% on DashPass orders), 29% Premier; 8% to 10% pickup. Plans apply to restaurants with 75 or fewer Canadian locations.
- SkipTheDishes: no published rate; your contract sets it.
- Tax on the fee: GST/HST is added to the commission; in BC, 7% PST too.
- BC: a 20% base tier is the law for big apps; higher tiers must be optional.
- Direct orders on Menuthere: 0% commission; you pay Stripe's 2.9% + C$0.30.
This page compares the apps for restaurant owners, not drivers.

GST/HST and PST on the commission
The apps add sales tax to their fee. Uber's Canadian tax FAQ says applicable taxes are charged on the marketplace fee and that Uber issues invoices so you can claim input tax credits. A registered restaurant can claim back the GST/HST on the fee, so the commission itself is the real cost.
British Columbia adds PST. BC charges 7% PST on online marketplace services, and its PST bulletin gives the example of a BC restaurant that must pay PST on the fee an online marketplace charges it. Uber says it has charged PST on top of its marketplace fee in BC since 1 July 2022. PST isn't part of the GST input tax credit system, so treat it as a cost.
Who collects tax on the food itself. You're the seller, so you collect GST/HST on app orders. In Saskatchewan, Manitoba and British Columbia, the app is a marketplace facilitator and collects and remits the PST or RST on orders placed through it. On your own website, you collect all of it. See GST/HST on restaurant food for the rates.
Payouts
| How you're paid | |
|---|---|
| DoorDash | Weekly by default: the period runs Monday to Sunday, the deposit is sent Thursday and lands around Friday; deposits can take 2 to 3 business days. You can opt in to daily payouts on weekdays for sales 3 days earlier. |
| Uber Eats | Payouts and tax invoices are in the Payments tab of Uber Eats Manager. |
| SkipTheDishes | Set out in your agreement. |
| Your own site with Menuthere | Card payments go straight to your own Stripe balance and pay out to your bank on Stripe's schedule. |
Fee caps: British Columbia only
British Columbia's Food Delivery Service Fee Act has applied since 1 January 2023 to delivery platforms that serve 500 or more restaurants. They must offer a base tier for core ordering and delivery at no more than 20% of the food and drink price, before tax and tips. A higher fee is allowed only for enhanced services, such as marketing or lower customer fees, that the restaurant agrees to, and the restaurant can cancel them on 7 days' notice and return to 20%. Complaints go to the province, and penalties go up to C$2,300. If you've seen a "15% plus 5%" BC cap quoted, it predates this Act.
Ontario's Supporting Local Restaurants Act, 2020 caps app fees only for non-chain restaurants whose indoor dining is banned by a COVID-19 order, so it doesn't limit fees today.
Worked example: one C$40 order in Ontario
Food subtotal C$40.00 before tax and tip; the customer also pays 13% HST (C$5.20). Rates as of October 2026.
| Channel and plan | Rate | Fee on C$40 | 13% HST on the fee (claimable) | You keep from C$40 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uber Eats Lite, delivery | 20% | C$8.00 | C$1.04 | C$32.00 |
| Uber Eats Plus, delivery | 25% | C$10.00 | C$1.30 | C$30.00 |
| Uber Eats Premium, delivery | 30% | C$12.00 | C$1.56 | C$28.00 |
| DoorDash Basic, delivery | 20% | C$8.00 | C$1.04 | C$32.00 |
| DoorDash Plus, DashPass delivery | 27% | C$10.80 | C$1.40 | C$29.20 |
| DoorDash Premier, delivery | 29% | C$11.60 | C$1.51 | C$28.40 |
| SkipTheDishes, at an assumed 25% | Your contract | C$10.00 | C$1.30 | C$30.00 |
| Uber Eats pickup (in-store prices) | 10% | C$4.00 | C$0.52 | C$36.00 |
| DoorDash Plus pickup | 8% | C$3.20 | C$0.42 | C$36.80 |
| Your own Menuthere page, pickup, paid by card | 0% + Stripe | C$1.61 (2.9% + C$0.30 on C$45.20) | n/a | C$38.39 |
The same Uber Eats Plus order in Vancouver: C$10.00 commission, plus 5% GST (C$0.50, claimable) and 7% PST (C$0.70, not claimable), so the real cost is C$10.70. BC's 20% base tier would put the commission at C$8.00 plus C$0.56 PST.
Delivering a direct order: with your own riders (Pro plan) you pay your rider; DoorDash also sells on-demand courier delivery for orders from your own channels at a flat C$6.99 to C$10.99 per delivery, according to its pricing page. Try your own numbers in the delivery fee calculator.
How to choose
- Need reach in a new area? All three apps bring customers who don't know you yet. Start on an entry plan (Uber Eats Lite or DoorDash Basic at 20%) and only move up if the extra visibility pays for the extra 5% to 10%.
- Offer pickup on the apps at 8% to 10%, and keep your app prices the same as in-store so you qualify for those pickup rates.
- Read your Skip contract: the rate, any promotion costs and how card processing is charged.
- You can list on more than one app: see can I be on Uber Eats and DoorDash at the same time.
- Move regulars to your own link. A QR code on the bag or receipt sends repeat customers to a page where you pay no commission. The apps' own "commission-free" website tools have their own fees; see are Uber Webshop and DoorDash direct really commission-free.
Direct orders with Menuthere
- Free plan: your own ordering website and QR menu, pickup, delivery and dine-in orders, orders sent to your WhatsApp, up to 50 orders a month, 0% commission, no card needed. Customers pay at the counter.
- Lite (US$17 a month): online card payments, Apple Pay and Google Pay through your own Stripe account, pre-orders, coupons and your own domain. Stripe charges 2.9% + C$0.30 per domestic card (Stripe's fees in Canada).
- Pro (US$39 a month): your own riders, loyalty points and several outlets.
Menuthere takes 0% commission on every plan. Compare SkipTheDishes alternatives, DoorDash alternatives, commission-free online ordering and the online ordering system for Canada. All app rates: delivery app commission. Plans: pricing.
FAQs
Which delivery app is cheapest for restaurants in Canada?
On published rates, Uber Eats Lite and DoorDash Basic both charge 20% on delivery orders. For pickup, DoorDash charges 8% on Plus and Premier and Uber Eats charges 10% when your app prices match in-store. SkipTheDishes doesn't publish its rates.
What commission does SkipTheDishes charge restaurants?
SkipTheDishes doesn't publish its commission; each restaurant's rate is set in its agreement. Check your contract for the delivery and pickup rates, promotion costs and how card processing is charged.
Do delivery apps charge GST/HST on their commission?
Yes. Uber Eats adds applicable taxes to its marketplace fee and issues invoices so registered restaurants can claim input tax credits. In British Columbia, 7% PST also applies to these marketplace fees.
Is there a cap on delivery app fees in Canada?
In British Columbia, apps serving 500 or more restaurants must offer a base tier capped at 20% of the order before tax and tips. Ontario's 2020 cap applies only while a COVID-19 order bans indoor dining, so it doesn't limit fees today.
How often does DoorDash pay restaurants in Canada?
Weekly by default, for sales from Monday to Sunday, with the deposit sent on Thursday. You can opt in to daily payouts on weekdays for sales from three days earlier.
Can I take delivery and pickup orders without paying commission?
Yes. Menuthere's Free plan gives you an ordering website with up to 50 orders a month at 0% commission, paid at the counter. On Lite, customers pay by card through your own Stripe account at 2.9% + C$0.30.
