How to choose a café name: 7 tips
- Say it out loud. Would you be happy answering the phone with it 50 times a day?
- Make it easy to spell. People will search for you after a friend mentions you. Odd spellings lose those customers.
- Keep it short. One to three words. It must fit on your sign, your cups, your loyalty cards and an Instagram handle.
- Match it to your offer. "Concrete & Crema" says speciality coffee. "Hayloft Tea Rooms" says scones and a pot of tea. Both are good. They just bring in different people.
- Think about growth. If you might open a second site, avoid naming it after one street.
- Avoid trends that date. Names tied to a meme or a passing craze can feel old in two years.
- Check it's free. This step matters most. See below.
Tip for "aesthetic" names: test the name on a mock-up first. Put it on a cup, a paper bag and a phone screen. Pretty names in script fonts can be hard to read at small sizes.
How to check your café name is free to use
Run these checks before you spend money on signs, cups or a website. The generator links to all of them.
| Check | Where | What you're looking for |
|---|---|---|
| Company name | Companies House name checker | The same name already registered. "Ltd", "the" and "&" vs "and" don't count as differences |
| Sensitive words | Companies House guidance | Words such as "Royal" or "British" need approval for a company name |
| Trade marks | UK trade mark search | Similar marks in class 43 (café services) and class 30 (coffee, tea, cakes) |
| Local cafés | Google Maps and the food hygiene ratings site | A café near you with the same or a very similar name |
| Domain | Any domain registrar | Is the .co.uk free? Then the .com? |
| Social handles | Instagram, TikTok, Facebook | The same handle on every platform, if you can |
Sole trader? You don't register your café name with Companies House. But the name can't include "Ltd" or "Limited", can't be offensive, and can't be too like someone's trade mark.
Want stronger protection? A UK trade mark costs from £205 and lasts 10 years. If your café name will be on cups, bags and maybe a second site, it's worth thinking about.
This is general information, not legal advice. If you're unsure, speak to a trade mark attorney.
Once you've chosen your name
- Register your food business with your local council at least 28 days before you open. It's free. Our guide to opening a café in the UK covers the rest of the checklist.
- Set up your menu. Use our café menu templates and work out your prices with the GP calculator. Hot drinks and eat-in food carry 20% VAT, so price with that in mind.
- Print a loyalty card with your new name using the loyalty card maker.
- Put a QR code on every table so guests can see the menu and order from their phone. See our free QR code menu, and compare tills in EPOS for cafés.
- Take orders online. Let regulars order their coffee ahead for collection, so they skip the queue.
Got your café name? Put it on your own ordering page today. Order-ahead collection, table QR ordering and 0% commission.
Menuthere's Free plan includes an ordering website, QR codes and unlimited menu items. You can tag the 14 allergens and calories on each dish and drink, on every plan, and customers see them when they open it. Pre-orders for a later time or day (such as tomorrow's office coffee run) start on Lite. See how it works for cafés. Once regulars order every week, you can also have your own café app with loyalty points and push offers on the Branded App plan (US$99 a month).
FAQs
What is a good name for a café?
A good café name is short, easy to say and spell, and hints at the feel of the place. It should also be free to use: not taken on Companies House, not too like a trade mark, and not used by another café nearby.
How do I come up with a unique coffee shop name?
Start with your area, your story and your coffee. Write down local words, street names and things you love. Then mix them, for example "place + coffee" or "two words joined by &". Our free generator does this for you.
What are some aesthetic café names?
Soft, nature-inspired names work well, such as "Honey Hour", "Petal & Pour" or "Moss & Milk". Test them on a cup and a phone screen first, so they stay readable.
Do I need to register my café name?
If you set up a limited company, the company name is registered with Companies House. Sole traders don't register a trading name. A trade mark is optional but gives you the best protection.
Can I use a pun for my café name?
Yes, puns are memorable. Just check it's easy to say and search for, and that it's not a pun lots of other cafés already use. Popular puns are often already trade marked.
Should my café name include the word "café" or "coffee"?
It helps if the rest of the name doesn't explain what you do. "Wren" on its own could be anything. "Wren Coffee" is clear on Google Maps and in search.
How much does it cost to register a café name?
Registering a limited company online costs £100. A UK trade mark costs from £205 for protection. Checking a name is free.
What should I call my coffee van?
Pick something short that fits on the van and a cup, like "Hatch Coffee" or "Pitstop Pour". Make sure the Instagram handle is free, as most coffee van customers find you there.
