How to choose a bakery name
- Keep it short and easy to spell. It has to fit on a cake box sticker, a label and an Instagram handle.
- Say what you sell. If the name is abstract ("Wren"), add "Bakery" or "Cakes". It helps on Google Maps.
- Think about where you'll sell. A market stall name can be fun. A wedding cake name should feel calm and grown-up.
- Leave room to grow. "Cupcakes by Jo" is tricky if you start making wedding cakes and bread.
- Picture it on a box. Many home bakers sell in boxes. Your name will sit next to a PPDS ingredients label, so test them together.
How to check your bakery name is free
| Check | Where | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Company name | Companies House name checker | The same name already registered ("Ltd", "the" and "&" vs "and" don't make it different) |
| Trade marks | UK trade mark search | Similar marks in class 30 (bread, cakes, pastry, ice cream) and class 43 (café and catering services) |
| Local bakers | Google Maps, Instagram and the food hygiene ratings site | Another baker near you with the same or a similar name |
| Domain | Any registrar | The .co.uk, then the .com |
| Social handles | Instagram, Facebook, TikTok | The same handle everywhere. For home bakers, Instagram matters most |
Sole trader? Most home bakers start as sole traders. You don't register your trading name, but it can't include "Ltd" or "Limited", can't be offensive, and can't be too like someone's trade mark. Your own name still has to go on invoices.
This is general information, not legal advice.
Home baker? What to do after you choose a name
Selling cakes from home is a food business, so a few rules apply. Here are the basics:
- Register with your local council at least 28 days before you start selling. It's free, and it applies to home kitchens too.
- Expect a food hygiene inspection. Council officers visit home kitchens too, usually without an appointment, and you'll get a food hygiene rating, just like a bakery shop.
- Know your allergens. You must tell customers which of the 14 allergens are in your bakes.
- Label boxed bakes properly. If you box or wrap a cake before the customer orders it, it's "prepacked for direct sale" (PPDS). Under Natasha's Law it needs a label with the name of the food and a full ingredients list, with allergens emphasised. Our allergen label maker prints these for free. Cakes made to order and boxed when collected don't need a PPDS label, but you still must give allergen information.
- Price for profit. Use the cake price calculator so your time and ingredients are covered.
- Make ordering easy. Custom cakes need dates, sizes, flavours and allergies. Taking that by DM gets messy fast.

Menuthere's Free plan includes an ordering website, QR codes and unlimited items. You can tag the 14 allergens, calories and a halal mark on each bake, on every plan, and customers see them when they open it. On Lite (US$17 a month, with a 7-day free trial; a card is needed to start) you can add pre-orders (great for cakes booked weeks ahead, with dishes that need a day's notice) and card payments through your own Stripe account. See how it works for home bakers and for bakeries.
FAQs
What is a good name for a bakery?
A good bakery name is short, easy to spell and tells people you bake. It should feel warm and fresh. Check it's not already registered on Companies House or trade marked for bread and cakes (class 30).
What should I call my home cake business?
Many home bakers use their own name, like "Bakes by Priya", or a homely name such as "Kitchen Table Cakes". Both feel personal. Make sure the Instagram handle is free, as most cake orders start there.
How do I come up with a unique bakery name?
Mix a local word or bake with a baking word, for example "Stottie & Co." or "Levain Lane". Our free name generator builds ideas from your town and your favourite bakes.
Do I need to register my bakery name?
Only if you set up a limited company, as the company name is registered with Companies House. Sole traders don't register a trading name. You do need to register your food business with your council.
Can I use a pun for my bakery name?
Yes. Puns work well on market stalls and social media. Just check the pun isn't already trade marked, as the obvious ones often are.
Do home bakers need to label their cakes?
If you pack cakes before the customer orders, they're PPDS and need a full ingredients label with allergens emphasised. Cakes made to order don't need that label, but you must still tell customers about allergens.
What are good ice cream shop names?
Fun, summery names work well, like "Ripple Room", "Two Scoop Street" or "Cone & Coast". Keep it short enough to fit on a cone sleeve and a shopfront.
How much does it cost to protect a bakery name?
Checking is free. Registering a limited company online costs £100. A UK trade mark costs from £205 and lasts 10 years.
