For UK restaurants and takeaways

Online ordering system for UK restaurants and takeaways

An online ordering system lets customers order and pay on your own website, so you keep the order and the customer. Menuthere gives UK restaurants, takeaways and cafés one menu for collection, delivery and table orders, at 0% commission on every plan.

Free plan: 50 orders a month and 0% commission. Paid plans from US$17 a month. Find your restaurant on Google to start.

What it does

What a restaurant online ordering system does

It has two halves. The customer side is a mobile-friendly menu on your own link or domain: customers pick items, sizes and extras, choose collection or delivery, and pay. The kitchen side is where orders land, on a dashboard, a phone app and a kitchen printer, so staff can accept, cook and mark the order ready.

The difference from Just Eat, Deliveroo or Uber Eats is ownership. On an app, the platform owns the customer and charges a cut of every order. On your own system, the customer orders from you, you see their name and number, and you pay a flat monthly fee or nothing at all. Most UK owners use both: the apps bring new customers, and your own system turns them into regulars who order direct next time.

  • 0% commission on every plan. Card payments go through your own Stripe account.
  • Free plan for 50 orders a month; paid plans from US$17 a month.
  • Collection, delivery and table orders from one menu.

What the apps charge

What Just Eat, Deliveroo and Uber Eats charge UK restaurants

Published or reported rates for 2026. All three add 20% VAT on their fees. We found no legal cap on delivery-app commission in the UK, and platform terms change often, so re-check yours each year.

Worked example

300 orders a month at £25

Your takeaway does 300 orders a month at an average of £25: £7,500 in sales. Even if only a third of those orders move to your own site, you save hundreds of pounds a month.

Monthly and yearly cost of £7,500 of orders by channel
ChannelFeeVAT on feeTotal a monthA year
App delivers (30%)£2,250£450£2,700£32,400
Just Eat, own drivers (14%)£1,050£210£1,260£15,120
Uber Eats, own delivery (13%)£975£195£1,170£14,040
Your own system (Menuthere Lite + Stripe standard UK cards)US$17 plan + £172.50 card feesNo commission, so no VAT on commissionabout £172.50 + US$17about £2,070 + US$204 (or US$170 on yearly billing)

If you're VAT-registered, you can usually reclaim the VAT on app fees. That helps cash flow, but the commission itself is still gone.

How it works

How Menuthere's online ordering system works

  1. 1

    Find your business on Google

Menuthere pulls your name, address and photos from your Google listing.

  2. 2

    Import your menu

Upload a photo or PDF and the AI reads in the dishes and prices. Sizes, add-ons and sold-out marking are built in. Moving from GloriaFood? Import that menu directly.

  3. 3

    Choose order types

Collection, delivery and dine-in table orders, all from one menu.

  4. 4

    Set up payments

Cash, pay on collection or payment links on Free. Your own Stripe account for card payments on Lite and above.

  5. 5

    Share your link

On your Google Business Profile, Instagram bio, flyers and receipts. Print the free QR codes for the counter and tables.

  6. 6

    Take orders

Each order rings on the partner app until someone accepts it, or switch on auto-accept. Tickets print to your kitchen printer.

Features

Features UK restaurants use most

  • One ordering website

Collection, delivery and table orders. Scheduled orders and pre-orders on Lite, so customers can order Friday's dinner at lunchtime. Minimum order value and a free-delivery threshold at checkout.

  • QR table ordering

A second round from the same table joins the open bill. See QR code ordering.

  • Delivery zones

Basic zones on every plan; advanced zones with pricing by zone and distance fees on Lite and above. Your own riders app with live tracking on Pro.

  • Card payments

Through your own Stripe account (Lite and above); Stripe pays you directly. Apple Pay and Google Pay if you switch them on in Stripe. WhatsApp Pay isn't available in the UK. See online payments.

  • Kitchen and staff

Partner app for Android and iPhone with ringing alerts. Kitchen tickets, auto-accept and unlimited staff logins on every plan.

  • Repeat orders

Coupons and Google menu sync (Lite), loyalty points and review requests (Pro), and WhatsApp ordering on your own number with automatic updates (Pro; Meta charges per message).

Card payments

Taking card payments with Stripe in the UK

Menuthere never touches your money. Stripe charges its own fee, and Menuthere adds nothing on top. Currency conversion adds 2% and a dispute costs £20; Stripe has no setup or monthly fee on standard pricing.

Stripe UK card fees on a £25 order and on 300 orders a month

EEA cards2.5% + 20p82.5p£247.50

You can't pass card fees to customers as a surcharge. Consumer card surcharges have been banned in the UK since 13 January 2018, so build the cost into your menu prices.

UK rules

UK rules your online menu has to follow

Allergens: give allergen information for the 14 major allergens before the customer buys and again at delivery (the FSA's distance-selling rule), on the menu itself or one click away, then with a sticker, a printed menu or the driver at delivery. On Menuthere, tag the 14 allergens on each dish, on every plan including Free, and customers see them when they open a dish. Keep a full allergen matrix too.

Calories: menu calorie labelling applies only to businesses with 250 or more employees in England (since April 2022); ignoring an improvement notice can bring a £2,500 fixed penalty. Most independents are exempt. If you show calories, add the kcal to each dish in Menuthere.

Prices and VAT: prices must be in sterling and include VAT (Price Marking Order 2004), and mandatory charges must be in the total price shown (Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, section 230, since 6 April 2025). Hot takeaway food is standard-rated at 20%; cold takeaway food is generally zero-rated (HMRC VAT Notice 709/1). See VAT on takeaway food.

  • 14 allergens before purchase and at delivery
  • Prices in sterling, VAT included
  • No card surcharges
  • Tips go to staff in full (Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023)

Questions owners ask

Answered, plainly.

It depends on your size and contract appetite. For most independents, look for 0% commission, no long contract, card payments into your own account, and clear allergen information. Menuthere ticks those boxes and has a free plan. Square is a strong option if you already use Square tills.

Costs range from free to £150 or more a month per site, and some providers also take a percentage of sales. Menuthere is free for 50 orders a month and US$17 a month for unlimited orders. You also pay card fees to Stripe, from 1.5% + 20p per UK card.

Yes. Menuthere's Free plan has no time limit and no commission, and it covers 50 orders a month. Square also has a free plan, with card fees on each order. GloriaFood closes completely on 30 April 2027.

Not with Menuthere. It takes 0% on every plan. Your payment provider, Stripe, charges its normal card fee.

No. Card surcharges on consumer cards have been banned in the UK since January 2018. Build card costs into your prices.

Give the 14 allergens before the customer orders, on the menu or one click away, and repeat them at delivery with a sticker, printed menu or verbally. On Menuthere, tag the 14 allergens on each dish (every plan, including Free), so customers see them when they open the dish. Keep a full allergen matrix too.

Yes. Prices shown to consumers must include VAT. Hot takeaway food is standard-rated at 20%. Cold takeaway food is generally zero-rated.

Yes. Many owners keep the apps for new customers and use Menuthere for direct orders. Menuthere does not pull app orders into one screen.

No. Menuthere plans are month to month, and you can cancel or switch anytime.

Yes, on Pro. A customer sends “Hi” to your number and gets an Order Now button. Updates are sent automatically. Meta charges per message.
