WhatsApp payments in the UK: how restaurants and takeaways get paid
Updated 19 October 2026
WhatsApp Pay is not available in the UK. Customers can't pay inside a WhatsApp chat here. Meta's in-chat payments run in a handful of countries, mainly India and Brazil. UK restaurants and takeaways take payment another way: a card checkout on their own ordering page, or a payment link sent in the chat. Both accept cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Cash or card on collection works too.
This guide covers each option, what it costs in pounds, how to spot fake payment screenshots, and the card-safety basics every food business should follow.
Let customers pay by card the moment they order. send the link on WhatsApp.
Can you pay on WhatsApp in the UK?
No. In-chat payments ("WhatsApp Pay") aren't offered in the UK.
- Where it exists: Meta's developer documents cover payments in India (local payment apps and gateways) and Brazil (Pix, cards and payment links). In-chat payments run in only a small number of countries, and the UK isn't one of them.
- In the UK: no in-app wallet, no "Pay now" button inside the chat, and no WhatsApp payment account for businesses.
- Why the UK search results confuse people: Google UK sometimes shows WhatsApp's India payments page. It doesn't apply here.
So for a UK business, "WhatsApp payments" really means taking payment for an order that arrives through WhatsApp. You have four ways to do it.
4 ways to take payment for WhatsApp orders in the UK
| Method | How it works | Customer pays with | Typical fee | Risk | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Checkout on your ordering page | You send a menu link. The customer orders and pays in one go. | Card; Apple Pay and Google Pay where enabled | Your card processor's fee only, e.g. Stripe 1.5% + 20p on standard UK cards | Low: the processor confirms payment | Most takeaways |
| 2. Payment link in the chat | You agree the order in the chat, then send a link for the total. | Card, Apple Pay and Google Pay (depends on provider) | Same as your processor's card fee; Stripe Payment Links add no extra charge | Low | Custom orders, cakes, catering, deposits |
| 3. Pay on collection or delivery | Customer pays at the counter or to the driver. | Cash or card terminal | Terminal fees on card; £0 on cash | Medium: no-shows | Regulars, short distances |
| 4. Bank transfer | You share your bank details; customer sends money. | Faster Payments from their banking app | Depends on your bank's business tariff | High: fake screenshots | Large catering orders, with care |
1. A card checkout on your own ordering page (best for most)
The cleanest way: don't take payment in the chat at all. Send customers a link to your online menu. They pick dishes, sizes and extras, then pay at checkout. The payment processor confirms the money before the order reaches your kitchen.
- No typing card details into chats.
- No screenshots to check. The order shows as paid.
- Fewer mistakes. The total is calculated for them.
On Menuthere, card payments go through your own Stripe account on the Lite plan and above (US$17 a month, billed in US dollars; your bank converts it). Money goes straight to you. Menuthere takes 0% commission; Stripe charges its own fee. Apple Pay and Google Pay are available if you switch them on in your own Stripe account. On the Free plan, you can take cash, pay on pickup, payment links or bank details. See online payments and does Menuthere take a commission on payments?
With Menuthere Pro, customers send "Hi" to your WhatsApp number, tap Order Now, order from your menu and pay. Then updates come back to their WhatsApp automatically. See the WhatsApp ordering system for UK takeaways.
2. A WhatsApp payment link
A payment link is a secure web page for one payment. You paste it into the chat. The customer taps it and pays by card or wallet. Good for orders that don't fit a menu: a birthday cake, a party platter, a catering deposit.
Providers in the UK include Stripe Payment Links, SumUp and Square. Check each provider's UK pricing page for its fees. Stripe says Payment Links come at no extra charge on its standard pricing.
How to send a Stripe payment link on WhatsApp
- Log in to your Stripe Dashboard and open Payment Links.
- Click + New (or click the + sign and choose Payment link).
- Add the item, for example "Birthday cake – 50% deposit, £30", or let the customer enter the amount.
- Click Create link and copy it.
- Paste it into the customer's WhatsApp chat with a short note: "Here's your secure payment link for £30. We'll confirm as soon as it's paid."
- Wait for Stripe to show the payment as successful before you start baking.
You can also turn a Stripe payment link into a QR code for a counter sign. Making a chat link or QR code for your own WhatsApp number is different: use the WhatsApp link generator for that.

3. Pay on collection or delivery
Still the most common way for regulars. It's simple, but you carry the risk of no-shows and prank orders. Ask for upfront payment on large orders, first-time customers or late-night delivery.
4. Bank transfer (use with care)
Bank transfers are free for many accounts, but they cause the most fraud. Scammers send a fake "payment sent" screenshot and collect the food. Only use bank transfer for known customers or big pre-booked orders, and always check your banking app first.
What payments cost: a £24 WhatsApp order
| Channel | Fee on a £24 order | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery app, platform delivers (30% + VAT) | £8.64 | 30% = £7.20, plus 20% VAT on the commission |
| Just Eat, own delivery (14% + VAT) | £4.03 | 14% = £3.36, plus VAT on the commission. See Just Eat commission |
| Stripe, standard UK card (1.5% + 20p) | £0.56 | Through your own checkout or payment link |
| Stripe, premium UK card (2.8% + 20p) | £0.87 | Some rewards and business cards |
| Cash on collection | £0 | Cash handling time and no-show risk |
Stripe UK pricing read 11 October 2026. Delivery-app rates from Menuthere's UK commission pages; re-check before publishing. VAT on commission can be reclaimed if you're VAT-registered.
Don't add a card surcharge. Charging consumers extra for paying by card has been banned in the UK since January 2018. Build card fees into your menu prices instead.
If you use WhatsApp's API to send order updates, Meta's message fees are separate. Meta bills your own WhatsApp account, and Menuthere adds no markup. Service messages inside the 24-hour customer service window are free for the first 1,000 a month per number, then £0.0159 (about 1.6p) each. A utility template to a UK number is also £0.0159. See WhatsApp Business API pricing in the UK.
Fake payment screenshots: how to protect your takeaway
A screenshot is a picture, not a payment. Anyone can edit one in seconds.
Warning signs:
- The customer sends a screenshot before you've given them your bank details or a payment link
- Pressure: "I've paid, my driver is outside, hurry"
- The amount, name or reference doesn't match the order
- "It says pending, but it will arrive soon"
- A new number placing a large late-night order
What to do:
- Never release food on a screenshot. Check your banking app, Stripe dashboard or order screen.
- Match three things: amount, payer name and reference.
- Prefer card checkout or payment links. The processor confirms payment, so there's nothing to fake.
- Faster Payments are real-time payments, available day and night, so a genuine transfer normally shows in your account quickly. "Pending" is a reason to wait, not to hand over the food.
- Block and report numbers that send fake orders.

Card safety basics (PCI DSS) for WhatsApp orders
Card security in the UK follows the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). It applies to every business that takes cards. You don't need to be an expert. Follow these rules:
- Never ask for card numbers on WhatsApp, by phone message, photo or voice note. Never write them down. WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy bans asking customers for full-length payment card numbers or financial account numbers. See can I ask customers for card numbers over WhatsApp?
- Use a hosted checkout or payment link. The card details go straight to the processor, not to you. Stripe says these low-risk integrations reduce your PCI obligations, because card data never passes through your systems.
- You still confirm compliance once a year. Stripe says PCI is a shared responsibility: it's certified as a PCI Level 1 provider, and businesses attest to their own compliance annually, usually with a self-assessment questionnaire. Stripe shows which documents apply to you in your Dashboard.
- If a customer sends card details anyway, don't use them. Delete the message, ask them to pay by link, and remind staff not to screenshot or forward it.
- Know your dispute window. Customers can dispute card payments for months after the order. Keep order records. See how long can a customer dispute a card payment?
This is general information, not legal or compliance advice. Ask your payment provider which PCI questionnaire applies to you.
