Onam offers for restaurants: run Sadhya pre-orders without the chaos
Updated October 20, 2026
The Onam money is in the Sadhya, and the Sadhya is a pre-order business. Families and offices book a date, a head count and a pack size days ahead. The restaurants that win Onam are the ones that take those bookings in writing — date, number of plates, veg notes — collect an advance, and deliver with their own riders instead of paying a delivery app a third of the bill. This playbook shows how to run Onam on Menuthere, commission-free.
In short
- Sell the Sadhya as a pre-order item with a collection/delivery date and a minimum notice (e.g. order by the evening before). Pre-orders are on Lite and above.
- Offer clear packs: per-plate, family pack (4), office/bulk (10+), and an add-on banana-leaf or payasam upsell.
- Take a UPI advance through your own Razorpay/Cashfree account so no-shows don't cost you a full Sadhya.
- Deliver with your own delivery boys and live tracking, or overflow to Porter/Rapido — see own delivery India.
- Promote on WhatsApp and a QR at the table in the run-up, not just on the day.
When is Onam?
Onam 2026 peaks on Thiruvonam, Wednesday 26 August 2026, with the 10-day festival beginning at Atham around 17 August. (Dates follow the Malayalam calendar; confirm against a current almanac each year.) Open bookings 2–3 weeks ahead — Onam Sadhya is planned, not impulse.
Step 1 — Build the Sadhya as a pre-order item
In Menuthere, make the Sadhya a pre-order item so customers pick a date and you control the notice:
- Collection/delivery date and time at checkout.
- Minimum notice — one notice setting covers your pre-order items, so set it to your longest prep (e.g. order by 8pm the day before).
- Pre-order-only — the Sadhya is ordered on its own, not mixed with today's à la carte basket.
- A prebookings list puts the orders due next at the top, so the kitchen isn't surprised on Thiruvonam morning.
Pre-order/scheduled orders are on Lite and above. See online ordering system for India.
Step 2 — Price the packs so bulk orders are easy
Sell sizes as one item so an office can order for ten in one tap. A sample structure (set your own prices):
| Pack | Serves | What's in it | Idea |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single Sadhya | 1 | Full banana-leaf meal | Per-plate base price |
| Family pack | 4 | 4 Sadhyas | Small per-plate discount |
| Office/bulk | 10+ | 10+ Sadhyas, packed | Free delivery over a threshold |
| Add-ons | — | Extra payasam, banana chips, sharkara varatti | Per-item add-on upsell |
Add a packaging charge per order or per item for delivery packs if you need it.
Step 3 — Take a UPI advance
An unpaid Sadhya that's never collected is a full-price loss. Take payment up front:
- Connect your own Razorpay, Cashfree or Easebuzz account and take prepaid UPI/card/netbanking at checkout (Lite and above). Menuthere takes 0% commission.
- For walk-in or phone bookings, collect the advance on your own UPI QR.
- Write your cancellation terms in the item description so they're agreed before payment.
Step 4 — Deliver without losing a third to an app
Onam delivery is a rush. Running it yourself keeps the margin:
- Add your own delivery boys (Pro); assign each order in one tap; the customer tracks the rider live.
- When riders are full, overflow to Porter/Rapido (add-on) so nothing is turned away.
- Collect any balance by UPI at the door with a per-order QR.
See own delivery for Indian restaurants.
Step 5 — Promote in the run-up
- Pin your Sadhya pre-order link to your WhatsApp status and broadcast — see WhatsApp ordering India.
- Put a QR code on tables and the counter two weeks before, going straight to the Onam menu — see QR code menu India.
- Share the link in local housing-society and office WhatsApp groups.
- Cap by closing bookings when the kitchen is full: mark the Sadhya sold out in one tap, switch it back on if you can take more.
Onam playbook checklist

FAQs
How should a restaurant take Onam Sadhya orders?
Sell the Sadhya as a pre-order item so customers pick a collection or delivery date at checkout, and set a minimum notice (for example, order by the evening before). On Menuthere, pre-orders are on the Lite plan and above, and the prebookings list keeps the kitchen ahead of what's due.
Can I take an advance payment for Onam bookings?
Yes. Connect your own Razorpay, Cashfree or Easebuzz account and take prepaid UPI, card or netbanking at checkout. Menuthere charges 0% commission, so the full advance reaches your account.
How do I deliver Onam Sadhya without paying delivery-app commission?
Use your own delivery boys on the Pro plan — assign each order in one tap and let the customer track the rider live — and overflow to Porter or Rapido when your riders are busy. You pay no commission to Menuthere.
When is Onam 2026?
Onam 2026 peaks on Thiruvonam, Wednesday 26 August 2026, with the 10-day festival starting around 17 August. Dates follow the Malayalam calendar, so confirm against a current almanac each year.
How far ahead should I open Sadhya bookings?
Open them two to three weeks ahead. Onam Sadhya is planned in advance by families and offices, so early bookings give your kitchen time to buy and prep.
