QR code menu for restaurants in India
Updated October 20, 2026
A QR code menu for an Indian restaurant should show prices in rupees with the veg or non-veg mark on every dish, take the order straight to the kitchen, let the guest pay by UPI from the table, and print a GST bill with your FSSAI number. Menuthere does all of that. The menu, table QR codes and up to 50 orders a month are free, UPI and card payments through your own gateway start on Lite, and Menuthere takes 0% commission on every order.
In short
- Veg and non-veg marks, allergens and calories on any plan. FSSAI's menu rules ask chains with a central license or 10+ outlets for calories per serving.
- GST at 5% for most restaurants, printed as CGST 2.5% + SGST 2.5% on the bill, with your GSTIN and 14-digit FSSAI number.
- UPI at the table: pay online through your own Razorpay or Easebuzz account (Lite), or scan a UPI QR on the table card that pays you directly.
- No service charge by default: Menuthere never adds one to an Indian bill, in line with the CCPA's 2022 guidelines.
- Eight Indian languages on the menu language button (Lite), plus your own dish names in any script on every plan.
What an Indian QR menu has to show
FSSAI's Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020 cover menus in regulation 9, "Display of information in food service establishments":
| FSSAI rule (regulation 9) | Who it applies to | Where it is in Menuthere |
|---|---|---|
| Calories in kcal per serving, and the serving size, against each item on menu cards or boards | Food service establishments with a central license or outlets at 10 or more locations | Calories per serving on each dish (every plan). Write the serving size in the dish description |
| The line "An average active adult requires 2,000 kcal energy per day, however, calorie needs may vary" | The same establishments | Not added automatically. Put it on your table card or menu cover |
| Allergen information against menu items (symbols allowed) | Listed in the same regulation | 14 allergens on each dish (every plan) |
| Veg or non-veg logo | Listed in the same regulation | Food Type: a green veg or red non-veg mark beside the dish name (every plan) |
| Nutrition information on request, in a booklet, handout or on the website | Listed in the same regulation | Your online menu shows allergens and calories when a guest opens a dish |
Regulation 9 doesn't apply to event caterers or to premises that operate for less than 60 days a year. If you aren't sure which parts apply to your outlet, ask your food safety officer. See veg and non-veg marks and allergens and nutrition.
Your FSSAI number belongs on the bill. FSSAI's order of 8 June 2021, enforced from 1 January 2022, requires every food business to print its 14-digit FSSAI license or registration number on cash receipts and bills. Switch on Print your FSSAI number under Settings → Printing → Bill content (every plan). Not sure whether you need an FSSAI registration, a state license or a central license? Answer four questions in the free FSSAI license checker.
GST on QR orders: 5%, split into CGST and SGST
The GST Council's 23rd meeting (10 November 2017) put all stand-alone restaurants, air-conditioned or not, and food parcels at 5% GST without input tax credit. Restaurants inside hotels that let a room above ₹7,500 a day pay 18% with credit. So a single rate usually covers your dine-in, takeaway and parcel menu.
Set it up in Menuthere:
- Go to
Settings → Payments & tax → Tax Settings, switch on Charge tax on orders, and enter 5 and your GSTIN. - If your menu prices already include GST, switch on Tax Inclusive on those dishes. Checkout then shows "GST (included)" and the price doesn't go up.
- Print. An Indian bill always splits the tax into two equal halves, CGST and SGST, and can show your GSTIN and FSSAI number in the footer. Outside India, bills never get that split.
See tax: GST and VAT and what to print on the bill.
Service charge. The Central Consumer Protection Authority's guidelines of 4 July 2022 say no hotel or restaurant can add a service charge automatically or by default to the food bill. Menuthere's optional service charge and tips feature is never offered to Indian stores, so a QR order can't carry one.
Worked example: a table of four in Bengaluru
Four guests scan the table QR and order two masala dosas at ₹120, one paneer butter masala at ₹280, four butter naans at ₹50 and four filter coffees at ₹40. GST is added on top. They pay by UPI on your checkout through Razorpay.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Food (2 × ₹120 + ₹280 + 4 × ₹50 + 4 × ₹40) | ₹880.00 |
| CGST 2.5% | ₹22.00 |
| SGST 2.5% | ₹22.00 |
| Guest pays | ₹924.00 |
| Razorpay fee (2% = ₹18.48, + 18% GST on the fee ₹3.33) | ₹21.81 |
| Menuthere commission | ₹0.00 |
| You receive | ₹902.19 |
Prefer to take UPI straight to your bank? Add a UPI payment QR to the table card (below) and mark the order paid at the counter. Your bank's charges, if any, apply instead.
How guests pay from the table
| Payment | How it works | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| UPI, card or netbanking on the checkout | Through your own Razorpay or Easebuzz account; with Cashfree, Menuthere sets it up with you on Pro | Lite (Cashfree: Pro) |
| Pay after the meal | Switch on Ask payment after order complete for dine-in. The order goes to the kitchen unpaid; after it's completed the guest has an hour to press Pay now, or pays at the counter | Lite |
| UPI QR on the table card | The free table QR card maker builds a Payment QR card, or an All in one card with your menu QR and your UPI QR side by side | Free tool |
| Cash at the counter | The guest orders by QR and pays at the till; you mark it paid | Every plan |
See payment options for each order type and Razorpay or Cashfree.
Menus in Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil and five more
Indian tables are multilingual, and so is a Menuthere QR menu:
- Dish names in your language, on every plan. Type a second name under each dish, such as மசாலா தோசை under "Masala dosa". You write it, so it reads correctly. See dish names in a second language.
- A language button on Lite. Guests switch the menu into Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi or Gujarati. You choose the languages and the one the menu opens in. See menu in several languages.
Language guides: Hindi menu, Malayalam menu, Tamil menu.
Settings Indian restaurants use
- Stop orders from outside the restaurant. Geo-lock asks for the phone's location at checkout from a table QR, so a photo of your QR shared on a family group can't place orders from home. See stop orders from outside the restaurant.
- View-only tables. Where waiters take the order, a view-only table QR opens the full menu in browse mode with no cart. See view-only tables.
- One QR for takeaway too. The same menu link takes parcel orders with a packaging charge. Put a QR sticker in every Zomato and Swiggy bag so regulars reorder direct. Neither app publishes its commission; Business Standard reported 15% to 30% in July 2026, plus 18% GST on it. See Zomato and Swiggy commission. For chat orders, see WhatsApp ordering in India.
