QR code menu for bakeries
Updated October 20, 2026
A QR code menu for a bakery puts today's case on the guest's phone, marks a tray sold out the moment it's gone, and takes cake orders for the day you can actually bake them. With Menuthere a code on the pastry case opens a menu to read, your store link takes pickup orders, and cakes that need notice can only be ordered for a date that gives you that notice. It opens in the phone's browser with no app, Menuthere takes 0% commission, and the menu codes and ordering are on the Free plan.
In short
- Two jobs, two codes. A menu code on the case for people in line; your store link for order-ahead pickup.
- Sold out in one tap. Switch a pastry off when the tray empties; guests see it as Unavailable.
- Cakes with notice. On Lite, cakes can be limited to pre-orders with, say, two days' notice and only on the days you bake them.
- Allergens on every item, including sesame, which became the ninth major allergen in the US on January 1, 2023.
- Not built in: stock counts that empty a tray by themselves, and selling by weight online.
Which code goes where in a bakery
| Spot | Code | What the guest can do | Plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pastry case, glass front | Digital menu code ("Scan to view our menu") | Read today's bakes with prices, allergens and calories while they wait in line | Free |
| Window and door | Your store link's QR code | Order ahead for pickup, or delivery if you offer it | Free; choosing a pickup time is on Lite |
| Cake display or celebration-cake binder | Your store link, opened on the Cakes section | Pre-order a cake for a later date | Pre-orders are on Lite |
| Cafe tables, if you have seating | A table QR code per table | Order coffee and pastries to the table | Free |
| Boxes and bags | Your store link | Reorder next time | Free |
The case code is the one most bakeries need first: lines move faster when guests decide before they reach the counter. A seated guest reads a table card from about 35 cm, so a code of about 3.5 cm works; a guest reading the case from a step back needs one closer to 9 cm. The QR code size calculator works it out for your link.
A bakery menu, built for phones
| Menu piece | Example | How you set it up |
|---|---|---|
| Categories | Viennoiserie, Breads, Cookies and bars, Whole cakes, Coffee | Categories, in the order of your case |
| Sizes | Sourdough loaf: half $6, whole $10 | Sizes (variants), each with its own price |
| Box counts | Macarons: box of 6 $15, box of 12 $28 | Sizes, so the guest picks one count |
| A choice inside the box | "Choose your flavors, up to 6", with two of one flavor allowed | Add-on group, multiple, "Up to 6", "More than one of each" on |
| Cake options | Size 6" or 8", sponge, filling, writing on top | Sizes for diameter; required single-choice groups for sponge and filling; the guest types the message in the order note |
| Morning-only bakes | Breakfast sandwiches 7:00 to 11:00 AM | Set Time on the dish; outside it, the dish leaves the menu |
| Weekend specials | Cinnamon rolls, Saturday and Sunday only | Set Time with only Sat and Sun picked |
| Allergens | Everything bagel: Gluten, Sesame | Allergens and nutrition on the dish |
A flavor group's limit is fixed per dish, so a box of 6 and a box of 12 need their own dish if each box has its own flavor limit. Already have a printed price list? Import it from a photo or PDF and check every price.
When the tray runs out
A bakery's menu changes by the hour. Switch a dish off from the Menu screen when the last croissant goes, and guests see it marked Unavailable; switch it back on for tomorrow's bake. You can also switch off a single size, such as whole loaves after the last one, while halves stay on. The digital menu booklet shows a switched-off item with a Sold out tag.
There's no stock count that switches a tray off by itself in this flow, so make "switch it off" part of emptying the tray.
Cake orders that respect your notice
Most bakeries lose money on cake orders taken for tomorrow when tomorrow is already full. On Lite, Dishes that need notice fixes that:
- In Prebooking settings, set Which orders can be prebooked to Specific items and tick your whole cakes.
- Set Earliest booking time, for example 2 days.
- Under Only made on, pick the days you bake celebration cakes, for example Thursday to Saturday.
A basket with only those cakes must be booked for a date and slot that meets the notice. A basket with a cake and a coffee is asked to split, because cakes with notice are ordered on their own. Everything else on your menu orders as normal. Slots never fall outside your opening hours.
Pricing a custom cake first? The free cake price calculator works out ingredients, time and margin, and the cake order form prints a form for phone and counter orders. Taking cake orders on WhatsApp instead? See how bakeries take custom cake orders on WhatsApp.
Allergens: what bakery guests look for first
Bakeries handle most of the major allergens on one bench. Each Menuthere dish can carry any of 14 allergens, including Gluten, Milk, Eggs, Tree nuts, Peanuts, Soy and Sesame, plus calories per serving. Guests see them when they tap the item, on the ordering menu and the digital menu.
Sesame matters in the US: under the FASTER Act it became the ninth major food allergen, and packaged foods have had to declare it since January 1, 2023. FDA has reported that some manufacturers responded by adding sesame to products that didn't contain it before, so check the labels on bought-in seeds, flours and toppings, not only your own recipes. Menuthere's list says Gluten where US labels say wheat, so name wheat in the description if it matters. For labels on boxed or wrapped bakes, the free allergen label maker prints them, and the allergen chart maker makes a chart for the counter from the allergens you ticked.
A worked example: one Saturday
A neighborhood bakery opens 7 AM to 2 PM and bakes celebration cakes Thursday to Saturday.
| Time | What happens | Feature used |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday | A customer orders an 8" chocolate cake ($48) for Saturday 11:00 AM. Friday and later are the first dates offered, because cakes need 2 days' notice | Dishes that need notice (Lite) |
| Saturday 7:00 AM | Guests in line scan the case code and read the morning bakes; breakfast sandwiches show until 11:00 AM | Digital menu code; Set Time |
| 8:15 AM | Twelve pickup orders arrive from regulars who scanned the window code last week | Store link |
| 10:40 AM | Last almond croissant sold; staff switch it off. Phone orders can't add it | Sold-out switch |
| 11:00 AM | The cake is collected; it arrived in Orders with its date and time days ago | Scheduled orders |
| 2:00 PM | Closing. A customer opening the menu sees "Pre-order for later" for slots inside your hours | Pre-orders while closed (Lite) |
On Lite that Saturday costs the plan's $17 a month and Stripe's card fee on paid orders (2.9% + 30¢ per domestic card at Stripe's standard US price). Menuthere's commission is $0.
What a bakery QR menu costs
| Plan | Price | What a bakery gets |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Case and table codes, ordering for pickup, sold-out switches, allergens, 50 orders a month |
| Lite | $17 a month | Unlimited orders, card payments through your own Stripe account, cake pre-orders with notice, pickup times, your own domain |
| Pro | $39 a month | Loyalty points, WhatsApp order updates from your own number, several outlets |
Lite and Pro start with a 7-day free trial; you add a card to start it. A bakery doing 30 pickup orders a day reaches the Free plan's 50 in two days, so treat Free as a trial run. For the whole bakery ordering picture, including delivery, see the bakery ordering system; baking from home, see the home bakery website.
Not a fit if
- You sell by weight online. A dish priced at the counter shows without an Add button, so guests can read it but staff price it at the register.
- You want trays to switch off by themselves. Make the sold-out switch part of the routine.
- Your till must receive the orders. Menuthere has no ready-made link to Square, Toast or Clover; orders arrive in the Menuthere dashboard and partner app.
- You need a deposit on cake orders. Pre-orders are paid like any other order, in full online on Lite or at pickup.
Set up your bakery's QR code menu
- Create your store. Search for your bakery on Google to fill in your name, address and photos, or start by hand.
- Add your menu. Import it from a photo or PDF, then add sizes, box counts and flavor groups.
- Tag allergens and set hours. Tick allergens on every item and give morning bakes their hours with Set Time.
- Set up cake notice. On Lite, limit pre-orders to your cakes, set the notice and the days you bake them.
- Print the codes. Download the "Scan to view our menu" card for the case and your store link's code for the window.
- Test it. Scan both codes with your own phone, place a pickup order and try to book a cake for tomorrow.
Menu codes and ordering are free, with 0% commission.
FAQs
What is a QR code menu for a bakery?
It's a code on your case, window or tables that opens your bakery's menu on a guest's phone. A menu code shows today's bakes with prices and allergens. Your store link's code also lets guests order ahead for pickup.
Can customers pre-order cakes from the QR code?
Yes, on Lite. You can limit pre-orders to your cakes, set how much notice you need and pick the days you bake them. Checkout then offers only dates that meet the notice.
How do I show that something sold out?
Switch the item off on the Menu screen. Guests see it as Unavailable and can't add it, and the digital menu shows it as Sold out. Switch it back on for the next bake.
Can I show allergens like sesame on my bakery menu?
Yes. Each item can carry any of 14 allergens, including Sesame, Gluten, Milk, Eggs, Tree nuts and Peanuts, plus calories. Guests see them when they tap the item.
Is a QR code menu free for bakeries?
Yes. Menuthere's Free plan includes menu codes, table codes and ordering, with up to 50 orders a month and 0% commission. Lite, at $17 a month, adds unlimited orders, card payments and cake pre-orders.
Can I sell bread or cookies by weight?
Not online. An item priced at the counter shows on the menu without an Add button, and staff enter the price at the register. For set weights, use sizes such as half and whole.
