WhatsApp ordering for restaurants in Nigeria
Updated October 19, 2026
WhatsApp is Nigeria's most used network, and on Meta's current card it's also one of the cheapest places to send order updates. In the Reuters Institute's Digital News Report 2026, 89% of Nigerian respondents used WhatsApp in the past week. From October 1, 2026, Meta charges US$0.0067 for each order update to a Nigerian number, and the reply to a customer's "Hi" falls inside 1,000 free service messages a month. With Menuthere, that "Hi" becomes a full order from your menu in naira, paid in cash, by transfer or at pickup.
In short
- Low message costs, billed in dollars. Meta has no naira card, so expect a USD charge on your card or account.
- Broadcasts are the expensive part. A marketing message costs US$0.0516, nearly eight times an update.
- No online card checkout yet. Stripe doesn't open accounts in Nigeria, and Menuthere doesn't connect Paystack, Flutterwave or Moniepoint. Customers pay cash, by transfer or at pickup.
- WhatsApp ordering is on Pro (US$39 a month), on your own number, with no Menuthere markup on Meta's fees.

What WhatsApp Business charges in Nigeria
Nigeria is a named market on Meta's card. In the USD file, "Cost per message in USD on the WhatsApp Business Platform, effective October 1, 2026":
| Category | Per message to a +234 number | What Menuthere sends in it |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing | US$0.0516 | Promotions, broadcasts, comeback messages |
| Utility | US$0.0067 | Every order update (placed, accepted, ready, dispatched, completed) |
| Service | US$0.0067 | The reply to "Hi" with the Order Now button; first 1,000 a month free |
Four things to know before you start:
- Order updates are always billed. Menuthere sends them as utility templates, which Meta charges from the first one.
- The reply to "Hi" is a service message. The first 1,000 each month per business number are free.
- Meta bills in dollars. It publishes 16 billing currencies and the naira isn't one of them. Use a card or account that can pay in USD.
- Without a payment method, replies stop after the free 1,000. See what happens with no payment method.

Transfers, cash and fake alerts
WhatsApp's in-chat business payments aren't available in Nigeria; WhatsApp's Help Center lists India, Brazil, Mexico and Indonesia only. So payment is up to you:
- Pay on delivery or at pickup in cash, on every plan.
- Bank transfer before you cook, for new customers or big orders. Check your bank app or SMS from your bank, not a screenshot the customer sends. Read how to avoid fake payment screenshots.
- Record how each order was paid in Menuthere, so the end-of-day count is quick.

Chowdeck, Glovo and your own WhatsApp
Chowdeck and Glovo are the delivery apps Nigerian customers know; Glovo lists Lagos among its cities. Neither app's orders come into Menuthere's dashboard, so you run them side by side: the apps for new customers, WhatsApp for regulars. We don't have commission pages for Nigerian apps yet, so check your own contract. Comparing platforms? See Glovo alternatives.
Worked example: a Lagos jollof kitchen, 500 WhatsApp orders a month
500 orders a month, every customer on a Nigerian number, paid in cash or by transfer.
| Item | Working | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| "Hi" replies (service) | 500, inside the 1,000 free | US$0 |
| Order updates, full flow | 500 × 5 = 2,500 × US$0.0067 | US$16.75 |
| Order updates, lean flow (placed + dispatched only) | 500 × 2 = 1,000 × US$0.0067 | US$6.70 |
| One broadcast to 1,000 opted-in customers | 1,000 × US$0.0516 | US$51.60 |
| Payment fees through Menuthere | Cash and transfer | None |
| Menuthere Pro | US$39 |
One broadcast costs about three times a full month of order updates. Send offers to a short, opted-in list, and let the dispatched message's Track Order button answer "where is my food?" for free.

FAQs
How much does WhatsApp Business charge in Nigeria?
From October 1, 2026, Meta charges US$0.0516 for a marketing message and US$0.0067 for a utility or service message to a Nigerian number. Menuthere's order updates are utility templates and always billed; only the reply to Hi falls in the 1,000 free service messages a month.
Can I pay Meta in naira?
No. Meta publishes rate cards in 16 currencies and the naira isn't one of them, so Nigerian businesses usually pay in US dollars. Use a card or account that can make USD payments.
Can customers pay online for WhatsApp orders in Nigeria?
Not by card through Menuthere yet. Stripe doesn't open accounts in Nigeria, and Menuthere doesn't connect Paystack, Flutterwave or Moniepoint. Customers pay cash, by bank transfer or at pickup.
How do I avoid fake transfer alerts on WhatsApp orders?
Confirm the money in your own bank app or your bank's SMS before you cook. Never rely on a screenshot or a forwarded alert from the customer.
Is the WhatsApp Business app enough for my restaurant?
For a few orders a day, yes. Once you're typing totals and updates all evening, Menuthere's Pro plan sends the Order Now button and the updates automatically from the same number.
