WhatsApp ordering for restaurants in South Africa
Updated October 19, 2026
South Africans use WhatsApp more than any other network, which makes it the cheapest way for a restaurant to take repeat orders. In the Reuters Institute's Digital News Report 2026, 89% of South African respondents used WhatsApp in the past week. With Menuthere, customers send "Hi" to your own number, tap Order Now and order from your menu in rand. They pay cash, by card on your machine, or by EFT. Meta charges US$0.0095 for each order update to a South African number from October 1, 2026. Updates are utility templates and always billed; the reply to "Hi" falls in Meta's 1,000 free service messages a month.
In short
- Very low message costs: a 500-order month comes to about US$23.75 in WhatsApp fees.
- No online card checkout yet: Stripe doesn't open accounts in South Africa, and Menuthere doesn't connect Paystack or PayFast. Cash, card on delivery and EFT work.
- Your own number, billed by Meta directly with no Menuthere markup.
- Pro plan, US$39 a month, for WhatsApp ordering and automatic updates.

Meta's prices for South African numbers
Meta lists South Africa as its own market. There's no rand card, so most South African accounts are billed in US dollars; Meta's 16 billing currencies include USD, EUR and GBP. From the USD file, "Cost per message in USD on the WhatsApp Business Platform, effective October 1, 2026":
| Category | Price per message to a +27 number |
|---|---|
| Marketing | US$0.0379 |
| Utility | US$0.0095 |
| Service | US$0.0095 |
- Only the reply to "Hi" is free, up to 1,000 a month. That's a service message. Menuthere's order updates are utility templates, and Meta bills every one at US$0.0095. Model it in the WhatsApp cost calculator.
- Add a payment method in Meta's WhatsApp Manager anyway. Without one, replies stop once the free 1,000 are used. See what happens with no payment method.
- Your bank will convert the dollars, so the rand amount on your statement depends on its exchange rate.
How customers pay
WhatsApp's in-chat business payments aren't available in South Africa; WhatsApp's Help Center lists India, Brazil, Mexico and Indonesia only. Menuthere's online checkout outside India uses Stripe, and Stripe doesn't open accounts here. So for now:
- Cash on delivery or pay at pickup, on every plan.
- Card on delivery with your own card machine.
- EFT to your bank details. Check the money has landed before you cook. Screenshots of a "payment made" page prove nothing; read how to avoid fake payment screenshots.
Menuthere doesn't connect Paystack or PayFast. You can record how each order was paid, and use the gateway request form in Settings → Payments & tax to tell us which gateway you'd like.

Worked example: a Durban bunny chow takeaway, 500 orders a month
500 WhatsApp orders a month at R200 (R100,000 in sales), all to South African numbers, all five updates on, paid in cash or by EFT.
| Item | Working | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| "Hi" replies (service) | 500, inside the 1,000 free | US$0 |
| Order updates (utility) | 500 × 5 = 2,500 × US$0.0095 | US$23.75 |
| Payment fees | Cash and EFT | R0 through Menuthere |
| Menuthere Pro | US$39 |
The same R100,000 on Uber Eats:
| Uber Eats plan | Fee | 15% VAT | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber delivers (30%) | R30,000 | R4,500 | R34,500 |
| You deliver (14%) | R14,000 | R2,100 | R16,100 |
Under US$60 a month in plan and message fees, against five figures in rand. That's the case for moving your regulars to WhatsApp, while the apps keep bringing new customers.
