For South African restaurants

The short answer
An online ordering system for a restaurant in South Africa is your own ordering website plus a dashboard. Customers choose pickup, delivery or dine-in on their phone from a link or a table QR code. You get the order on your phone and keep the customer's details. The menu opens in the phone's browser, so nobody downloads an app.
Delivery apps take a share of each order (see the next section). Menuthere takes 0% on every plan. You pay for the plan: Free with 50 orders a month, Lite at US$9 or Pro at US$39, billed in US dollars.
One limit comes first. Stripe lists South Africa only under "Extended network" (through Paystack) and does not open accounts there, so Menuthere cannot take online card payments for a South African restaurant. Customers pay cash on delivery or at the restaurant, or through a payment link or bank details (EFT) you add yourself. The payments section has the detail.
What you pay the apps today
Uber Eats prints its rates for South Africa on its merchant pricing page. Mr D does not publish a rate, so its row below is what the regulator and the trade press have reported. Many owners run an app and their own page together: the app brings new customers, and your page serves the ones you already have. Menuthere does not pull Uber Eats or Mr D orders into its dashboard.
| App | What the restaurant pays | Fees on top | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber Eats | 30% of the order when Uber's couriers deliver (33% on orders from Uber One members). 14% when you deliver yourself. 14% on pickup. Card processing is included. | Uber's terms say fees exclude VAT, so VAT is added to the fee (15% in South Africa). A one-time activation fee is set in your order form, and the amount is not published. Ads are optional and charged separately. | Uber Eats pricing, South Africa, read 7 October 2026, and merchant terms (last modified 15 October 2025). VAT, SARS. |
| Mr D | Not published. Restaurants pay a monthly subscription plus a percentage of every order, set in their contract, according to Mr D's own presentation to restaurants. A South African POS company wrote in October 2025 that restaurants lose 15% to 30% of revenue to commission on delivery platforms. That range is for the platforms in general, not a Mr D rate card. | A "nominal" monthly subscription, amount not published. Promotional packages are sold separately. Payouts are weekly. | Mr D, become a partner, read 7 October 2026. Mr D presentation to restaurants, December 2024. GAAP Point-of-Sale, 2 October 2025. |
What the regulator found: the Competition Commission's 2023 inquiry into online platforms found that Uber Eats and Mr D charged independent restaurants significantly more commission than chains, and told Uber Eats to adopt a tiered structure for independents and Mr D to give them promotional rebates and advertising credits (ENS summary, 31 July 2023). It set no cap on commission. Illustration, arithmetic only: 300 orders a month at R250 is R75,000 of sales. Uber Eats at 30% is R22,500 before VAT on the fee, and at 14% on pickup it is R10,500. Menuthere commission is R0. This assumes the percentage applies to the order value. Real costs also include riders and your own delivery. For the full breakdown see Uber Eats commission in South Africa and Mr D commission in South Africa.
Payments
Online card payments on Menuthere run on your own Stripe account. Stripe lists South Africa only under "Extended network", with a link to Paystack, and does not open accounts there (stripe.com/global, read 7 October 2026). So a South African store has no online card checkout on Menuthere. Menuthere does not connect Paystack, PayFast or any other local gateway.
Checkout shows "Cash on delivery" for delivery orders and "Pay at store" for pickup and dine-in. The dashboard marks these orders as COD, so the kitchen knows payment is due. At the counter or the door, you take payment the way you do today, on your own card machine or in cash.
On every plan you can add your own payment link or bank details to the checkout. Share your account for an EFT, or a payment link from a provider you already use. You check each payment yourself. Menuthere does not confirm it for you.
No card checkout, and no automatic confirmation of EFTs or links. Menuthere takes no cut of any payment. If you need payments confirmed at checkout, a tool with a local payment partner fits better. The last section names some.
WhatsApp is the app South Africans already use to talk to a business. In the Global Digital Report 2025, from Meltwater and We Are Social, 93.8% of active social media users in South Africa used it. Many small restaurants take orders in WhatsApp and Instagram messages today. The same orders can arrive on one page. See the free WhatsApp ordering system page, WhatsApp ordering and the free WhatsApp order page.
Put your ordering website link in your WhatsApp status, your Instagram bio and your Google profile. Put QR codes on tables, packaging and flyers.
Customers can chat with you on WhatsApp from the menu, and you get a copy of each order on your number.
Customers send "Hi" and get an Order Now button that opens the menu. Pro adds automatic order-status messages, broadcasts and your own WhatsApp bot. We have not tested a South African number on this set-up, so use the 7-day trial first. Meta bills the messages to your account, and Menuthere takes no cut. Meta's rate card from 1 October 2026 lists South Africa at US$0.0095 for utility and US$0.0379 for marketing messages (calculator).
Order types
Customers open your menu in their phone's browser and order without installing anything. It suits a café in Cape Town, a takeaway in Johannesburg or a restaurant with tables.
Customers choose Takeaway, order from your page and collect. Pay at store is available on every plan.
Customers type their address. The free plan has a delivery radius, fees and minimums. Lite adds fees by distance and delivery areas drawn on a map. Pro adds an app for your own riders with live tracking. Menuthere does not book Uber Eats, Mr D or other couriers for you.
Print a QR code for each table. A dashboard setting can check the diner is at the restaurant before an order goes through. A second order from the same table joins the open bill. More in table ordering.
On Lite, customers pick a time. The same plan covers table slot booking. It suits cakes and party platters.
Orders ring on the partner app (Android and iPhone) until someone accepts them. Auto-accept is available. Staff logins are unlimited.
Sizes and add-ons are on every plan. Import your menu from a photo, a PDF, an Instagram or Google link. Mark items out of stock. You set the store currency, so prices can show in rand.
Set-up
Plans are priced and billed in US dollars, so the rand amount moves with the exchange rate. Month to month, no contract, and a 7-day free trial on Lite and Pro.
You can set any currency for the store, so customers see rand prices.
In Settings, Payments, Tax, switch on "Charge tax on orders", enter a percentage and your tax number, and call it VAT. It shows at checkout and on bills. The standard VAT rate in South Africa is 15%, per SARS. Whether you must register depends on your turnover, so ask your accountant. Menuthere does not file VAT or issue tax-authority invoices.
Free is $0 with 50 orders a month, then the menu turns view-only until the 1st or you upgrade. Lite is US$9 and Pro is US$39. See pricing.
You keep the customer list from your own orders. Lite adds full order history and a customer list export. Read who owns the customer data from delivery app orders.
Compared
A fair look at tools South African owners consider, from each vendor's published pages (checked 27 September 2026). This is not a ranking. The full list is the ordering systems for South Africa.
