Card surcharge menu price calculator

Card surcharges on eftpos, Mastercard and Visa end on 1 October 2026. Type in your menu prices and what you used to add. You get new prices that keep your takings, rounded to a neat amount, and an A4 price list to print.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) ends card surcharges on eftpos, Mastercard and Visa from 1 October 2026, and the ACCC says businesses can no longer add a surcharge for card payments. Card costs can go into your overall prices instead. Weekend and public holiday surcharges are a different charge and are not part of this change. See the sources at the bottom of the page.

Fold the surcharge into your prices

Example numbers are filled in. Change them to yours.

  1. Your menu prices. Five example items are there to start. Enter prices as printed on your menu, with GST included.
  2. What you used to add. Work it out from the surcharge I added (a percentage of the bill) or my card fee (the percentage you pay on each card sale). Then enter the share of sales paid by card. Check your terminal reports for this.
  3. Round new prices to 10 cents, 50 cents or 1 dollar. Prices always round up.

You see how much your prices go up, your takings after rounding compared with before, and a table of old and new prices.

Example: 80% of sales on card, 1.5% surcharge

80% × 1.5% = 1.2%. Rounded up to the next 10 cents:

Old and new menu prices with 80% of sales on card and a 1.5% surcharge
ItemNowNew price
Flat white$5.00$5.10
Eggs on toast$18.00$18.30
Chicken parmigiana$28.50$28.90
Fish and chips$24.00$24.30
Beef burger with chips$22.00$22.30

Takings after rounding: +0.23% against before, if each dish sells equally often. The new prices carry the surcharge your card customers used to pay, spread over every customer.

The maths

  • From the surcharge you added: new price = old price × (1 + card share × surcharge). With 80% of sales on card and a 1.5% surcharge, a $20.00 dish becomes $20.24, rounded up to $20.30.
  • From your card fee: new price = old price ÷ (1 − card share × fee). After fees, you keep what you kept before.

Prices include GST. The calculator only scales them, so GST stays in.

Print your new price list

Make one A4 page with your new prices. Add your business name, a heading, an optional line at the bottom, and an optional phone number or website. Pick the Classic or Minimal design, any colour, a heading font and your logo. The list ends with "All prices include GST."

Download it as a PDF to print or as an image, or copy the new prices as text.

Need to rework your prices from scratch? Try the menu price calculator or the recipe cost calculator. Then put the new prices on a free WhatsApp order page.

How it works

  1. 1

    Add your menu prices

Type each item and the price on your menu today, with GST included. Five example items are there to start.

  2. 2

Say what you used to add

Enter the surcharge you added on card payments, or your card fee, and the share of your sales paid by card. Choose how to round.

  3. 3

    Print your new price list

See old and new prices side by side. Download the list as an A4 PDF, copy it as text, or put it on a free order page.

Questions owners ask

Answered, plainly.

Not on these cards. The Reserve Bank of Australia removes surcharging on eftpos, Mastercard and Visa from 1 October 2026. The ACCC says businesses can no longer add a surcharge for Visa, Mastercard, American Express or eftpos card payments. Read the sources below before you change your signs.

The RBA says weekend surcharges, public holiday surcharges, booking fees and service fees are not card surcharges. The ACCC says a café or restaurant with a weekend or public holiday surcharge must show on the menu, prominently, the words: a surcharge of a percentage applies on the named days.

Multiply each price by 1 plus the card share times the surcharge. Example: 80% of sales on card and a 1.5% surcharge is 1.2%. A $20.00 dish becomes $20.24, rounded up to $20.30. The ACCC says you can build card costs into your prices, but don't tell customers a rise is because of the surcharge change if it also covers other costs.

The ACCC says the total price must be shown as a single figure that includes taxes such as GST and any fee you cannot avoid. Enter your prices as printed, with GST included. The calculator only scales them, so GST stays in.

Switch to My card fee. Type the percentage you pay on each card sale and your card share. The new price is the old price divided by 1 minus the card share times the fee, so after fees you keep what you kept before.

The ACCC says the price you display must be the full price a customer pays without a payment method discount. Don't show only the discounted price, or make it stand out more than the full price. Check the ACCC page on price displays for the details.
