Conversion rate: how many menu visits turn into orders
Updated October 20, 2026
Conversion rate is the share of visits to your online or QR menu that end in an order: orders divided by visits. If 2,000 people opened your ordering page last month and 240 ordered, your conversion rate was 12%. It tells you whether people who look at your menu go on to buy, and the steps in between show where they stop.
In short
- Conversion rate = orders ÷ visits × 100, for the same period.
- Break it into steps: menu view → add to cart → checkout → order placed. The biggest drop is the one to fix.
- Common leaks: closed hours, slow pages, required sign-up, surprise fees at checkout, and failed payments.
- On Menuthere Analytics shows menu scans and a scan-to-order rate on every plan, and your own analytics tags can track each step (Lite).
The formula, and a four-step funnel
Conversion rate = orders placed ÷ menu visits × 100
| Step | People | Share of the step before | Share of all visits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opened the menu | 2,000 | — | 100% |
| Added something to the cart | 600 | 30% | 30% |
| Started checkout | 300 | 50% | 15% |
| Placed the order | 240 | 80% | 12% |
(Illustrative.) Here the biggest loss is between the cart and checkout: half of the people with something in the cart never start checkout. That's the step to look at first.
Where restaurants lose customers, and what helps
| Where they leave | Likely reasons | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Menu → cart | Closed, no photos, unclear prices, dish sold out | Clear hours and pre-orders, photos, sizes priced up front |
| Cart → checkout | Delivery fee or minimum shown late; sign-up wall | Show fees early; a free-delivery bar; quick phone sign-in |
| Checkout → order | Payment fails; address outside your area; no cash option | Card, wallets and cash where you accept it; a clear "deliver to these areas" message |
| After the order | Nothing, but they don't come back | A good order-tracking page and a reason to return |
Lifting conversion and average order value together is how online sales grow without more traffic.
Conversion for QR menus: the scan-to-order rate
For table QR codes, the equivalent is orders ÷ scans. A low rate with many scans can mean guests read the menu but order from a server, ordering isn't switched on for those tables, or the menu opens slowly on the restaurant's Wi-Fi.
How Menuthere measures conversion
- Menu scans and the scan → order rate (every plan). Analytics counts each opening of your menu from a printed QR code, shows scans by hour, and works out Scan → order rate: the period's orders divided by its scans. Because it compares all orders with QR scans only, it can pass 100% when most orders come from your link rather than QR codes.
- Your own funnel (Lite). Add your Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel or Snapchat Pixel ID and your store sends page views, dish views, add-to-cart, begin-checkout and purchase events, each purchase counted once. Build the funnel above in your own analytics.
- Unpaid checkouts. Online checkouts that were started but never paid appear under Dropped orders; if the customer did pay and the confirmation was missed, Menuthere finds the payment and turns it into a normal order. See dropped orders.
- WhatsApp ordering (Pro). Message analytics shows how many customers who got your welcome message placed an order within 24 hours. Outside the US, abandoned cart reminders can bring back customers who left a cart; in the US, Meta doesn't deliver marketing messages such as cart reminders to +1 numbers.
What it doesn't do: Menuthere's own Analytics doesn't show a visits-to-orders funnel for your website link; use your own analytics tag for that. Scans count only printed QR codes, not visits from Instagram or a shared link.
Put your menu online with scan-to-order tracking from day one. 0% commission.

FAQs
What is conversion rate for online ordering?
It is the share of visits to your online menu that end in a placed order, worked out as orders divided by visits over the same period. For example, 240 orders from 2,000 visits is a 12% conversion rate.
How do I calculate my restaurant's conversion rate?
Divide the number of orders by the number of menu visits in the same period and multiply by 100. To find where people drop off, also count how many add to the cart and how many start checkout.
What is a scan-to-order rate?
It is the QR-menu version of conversion rate: orders divided by QR code scans. On Menuthere it compares all orders in the period with scans of your printed QR codes, so it can pass 100% when many orders come from your link.
Why do customers leave without ordering?
Common reasons are that the restaurant is closed, prices or options are unclear, fees appear only at checkout, sign-up takes too long, or payment fails. Look at the step with the biggest drop first.
Can Menuthere track add-to-cart and checkout events?
Yes, from the Lite plan, through your own analytics tools. Add your Google Analytics, Meta, TikTok or Snapchat ID, and your store sends dish view, add-to-cart, begin-checkout and purchase events to your accounts.
