WhatsApp ordering system for restaurants in Malaysia

Updated October 19, 2026

A WhatsApp ordering system lets a Malaysian restaurant take full orders on its own number, without typing totals or chasing payment slips. With Menuthere, customers send "Hi", tap Order Now, pick from your menu in ringgit and pay by FPX or card into your own Stripe account. Order updates follow in the same chat. In Malaysia, updates are cheap (RM0.0564 each, billed as utility templates, on Meta's MYR card from October 1, 2026) but marketing messages are not (RM0.3467). So the system pays off on orders first and broadcasts second.

In short

  • 82% of Malaysian respondents used WhatsApp in the past week, and half used it for news (Reuters Institute, Digital News Report 2026).
  • FPX, GrabPay and cards through your own Stripe account (Lite and up). 0% commission from Menuthere.
  • Your own number on the official WhatsApp Business Platform. Meta bills you directly; Menuthere adds no markup.
  • Pro plan, US$39 a month, for WhatsApp ordering, updates, broadcasts and loyalty.

Why WhatsApp works for Malaysian restaurants

The Reuters Institute's Digital News Report 2026 (online survey by YouGov, published June 2026) asked Malaysians which networks they used in the past week:

NetworkAny purposeFor news
WhatsApp82%50%
YouTube71%41%
Facebook66%49%
TikTok62%45%
Instagram46%24%
Telegram38%16%

WhatsApp is first on both counts. If you already take orders there by hand, a system replaces the typing with a proper menu, a total and a payment.

Meta's MYR prices, and why broadcasts need care

Meta launched a ringgit card on April 1, 2026. Its current file is "Cost per message in MYR on the WhatsApp Business Platform, effective October 1, 2026". For messages to Malaysian (+60) numbers:

CategoryMYR cardUSD cardUsed for
MarketingRM0.3467US$0.086Promotions, new-menu broadcasts, comeback messages
UtilityRM0.0564US$0.014Every Menuthere order update (always billed)
ServiceRM0.0564US$0.014The reply to "Hi" and other free-form replies, after 1,000 free a month

A marketing message to a Malaysian number costs about six times an update. On the USD card, Malaysia's marketing rate (US$0.086) is higher than Singapore's (US$0.0732) and the UAE's (US$0.0576). So:

  • send offers to customers who asked for them, and keep lists short;
  • under Malaysia's PDPA, get consent before you send promotions. Read does Malaysia's PDPA apply to WhatsApp offers.

Menuthere sends order updates as utility templates, so each one is billed at RM0.0564, even for customers who sent "Hi". Only the reply to "Hi" is a service message, and the first 1,000 of those each month are free. Model your own numbers in the WhatsApp cost calculator. The four categories are explained in WhatsApp's four message types.

Payments: FPX, GrabPay and cards through Stripe

WhatsApp's in-chat business payments don't cover Malaysia (its Help Center lists India, Brazil, Mexico and Indonesia). Customers pay on your Menuthere checkout instead. Stripe opens accounts in Malaysia, and its standard prices are:

MethodStripe Malaysia standard price
Domestic cards3% + RM1.00
FPX3% + RM1.00
GrabPay3%

Menuthere's checkout offers the methods switched on in your Stripe account. Switch on FPX in Stripe, then place a small test order before you print the QR. Cash on delivery and pay at pickup work on every plan, including Free. Menuthere takes no commission on any of them.

ShopeeFood, GrabFood, foodpanda: what the apps take

AppFrom our commission pages
ShopeeFood30% standard commission, plus 8% SST on the fee
GrabFoodNot published; 30% is the rate most guides quote
foodpandaNot published; public reports say about 20% to 35%

Worked example: a Petaling Jaya nasi lemak shop

400 WhatsApp orders a month at RM40 average (RM16,000). Every customer has a Malaysian number, the account bills in MYR, and all five updates are on.

LineWorkingCost
"Hi" replies (service)400, inside the 1,000 freeRM0
Order updates (utility)400 × 5 = 2,000 × RM0.0564RM112.80
Monthly promo600 opted-in customers × RM0.3467RM208.02
Stripe (all orders by FPX or card)3% of RM16,000 + 400 × RM1.00RM880
Menuthere ProUS$39

On ShopeeFood instead: 30% of RM16,000 = RM4,800, plus 8% SST on the fee (RM384) = RM5,184.

Notice where the money goes: the promo costs more than all 400 orders' updates. If you want to save, trim the broadcast list before you trim the order updates.

Getting the menu right for Malaysia

  • Language: write your menu in Bahasa Malaysia or English. The menu language button (Lite and up) can also show it in Chinese or Tamil. Edit the WhatsApp replies into the language your customers write in; see taking orders from customers who speak another language.
  • Halal: tick the halal mark on a dish only if you're certified.
  • Starting free: not ready for Pro? Put your Free-plan menu link in your WhatsApp Business greeting. See the free WhatsApp ordering system.
  • Promotion tools: a pre-filled "Hi" link from the WhatsApp link generator, and a counter sticker from the WhatsApp QR sticker maker.

FAQs

What is the best WhatsApp ordering system in Malaysia for a small restaurant?

Look for one that runs on your own number, takes FPX or card payments without commission, and sends order updates automatically. Menuthere does all three on its Pro plan at US$39 a month, and you can start on the Free plan.

How much does WhatsApp Business API cost in Malaysia?

On Meta's MYR card effective October 1, 2026, a message to a Malaysian number costs RM0.3467 for marketing and RM0.0564 for utility or service. Menuthere's order updates are utility templates and always billed; only the reply to Hi counts toward the 1,000 free service messages a month.

Can customers pay with FPX for a WhatsApp order?

Yes, if you switch FPX on in your own Stripe account. Customers tap Order Now in WhatsApp, order on your Menuthere menu and pay at checkout. Stripe's standard FPX price in Malaysia is 3% + RM1.00.

Do I need consent to send WhatsApp promotions in Malaysia?

Get consent before you send marketing messages. Malaysia's PDPA covers how you use customers' personal data, and WhatsApp's own rules require opt-in for business messages.

Can my menu show Chinese or Tamil?

Yes. On Lite and up, the menu language button can show your menu in Chinese or Tamil, among 13 languages. Malay isn't one of them, so write your menu in Bahasa Malaysia if most customers read it.
