Restaurant profit margin calculator: what the delivery apps leave you

Net profit margin = (sales − every cost) ÷ sales × 100. Type one month's sales, food and labor cost, rent and other costs, and the share of sales that comes through delivery apps. You see your margin before commission, after it, and if the same orders came through your own ordering page instead. US medians for 2024 were 2.8% for table service and 4.0% for quick service, so one 25% commission can cost more than the whole margin.

Your net margin

Example numbers
Prime cost$38,400 · 64%

Food, drink and labor together.

Before delivery apps$5,100 · 8.5%

What you would keep if no order paid commission.

With delivery apps$600 · 1%

Delivery apps take $4,500 a month: 88% of the profit you would otherwise keep.

At 25% commission, once 34% of your sales come through the apps, the month makes nothing.

Same orders, ordered direct$4,578 · 7.6%

The same $18,000 of orders on your own ordering page, paying a 2.9% card fee ($522) instead of commission.

Moving those orders to your own page would keep $3,978 more a month, $47,736 a year.

Compare with US restaurants

US full-service median income before taxes, 2024: 2.8% of sales (food and drink 32%, labor 36.5%). From the National Restaurant Association's survey of more than 900 US restaurants. Medians, not targets.

How it works

  1. 1

    Enter one month

Sales, food and labor as a share of sales, rent and other costs. Example numbers are filled in to start.

  2. 2

    Add your delivery apps

The share of sales that comes through the apps and their average commission. The calculator takes it off your margin.

  3. 3

    Compare and copy

See your margin with the apps and with the same orders coming direct, then copy the numbers for your partner or accountant.

Worked example: a 9% margin and 30% of sales on the apps

These are the calculator's example numbers, not a benchmark. A restaurant sells $60,000 a month. Food is 31% of sales, labor 33%, rent $3,600 and everything else $12,600. Before any commission it keeps $5,400, a 9% margin. Then 30% of its sales ($18,000) come through delivery apps at an average 25% commission.

One month, three ways
Profit a monthNet margin
Before any commission$5,4009.0%
With 30% of sales on apps at 25%$9001.5%
Same orders on your own page (2.9% card fee)$4,8788.1%
  • Commission takes $4,500 a month, 83% of what the restaurant would otherwise keep.
  • At 36% of sales on the apps, the month makes nothing. Every app order past that point loses money unless app prices are higher.
  • Moving those orders to the restaurant's own page keeps $3,978 more a month, about $47,700 a year, before any change in prices.

The formulas

  • Net profit = sales − food and drink − labor − occupancy − other costs − delivery-app commission
  • Net profit margin = net profit ÷ sales × 100
  • Commission = sales × share of sales through apps × average commission %
  • Prime cost = food and drink + labor (the two biggest costs)

Sales are before sales tax or VAT and before the apps take their cut. If your app menu prices are higher than in-store, type your real app sales: the higher prices are already in them. For a full explanation, read the restaurant profit margin guide.

Questions owners ask

Answered, plainly.

There's no official target. The National Restaurant Association's survey of more than 900 US restaurants put the 2024 median income before taxes at 2.8% of sales for full-service restaurants and 4.0% for limited-service. Half did better, half worse.

Take one month's sales before tax. Subtract food and drink, labor, rent and every other cost, including delivery-app commission. Divide what's left by sales and multiply by 100. $3,000 left from $60,000 of sales is a 5% net margin.

Multiply the share of your sales that comes through the apps by their commission. 20% of sales at 30% commission takes 6% of all your sales, more than the US median margin. See the rates for DoorDash and Uber Eats.

Gross margin takes off only food and drink cost: a 30% food cost is a 70% gross margin. Net margin takes off every cost, including labor, rent and commission, so it is much smaller. This calculator shows net margin.

Many restaurants do, to cover the commission. Check your app agreement first. The menu price calculator shows the app price that leaves you the same money as a dine-in plate.

No. Everything is worked out in your browser and kept only on this device, so the numbers are still there next time you open the page.
