Tip pooling calculator: split tips between staff

Enter the shift's tips and who worked how many hours. Pick a way to split: by hours, by points per role, or a set share for the kitchen first. Every share is worked out to the cent and the total always adds up. Copy the split and send it to your team on WhatsApp.

2Staff and hours

Your staff list is saved on this device only, so it is ready for the next shift.

3How to split

Everyone gets the same amount for each hour they worked.

Who may share in a tip pool is set by law, and it differs by country and, in the US, by state. Under US federal rules, the owner, managers and supervisors may not receive tips from a tip pool, and cooks and dishwashers can be in a required pool only when you pay every worker at least the full federal minimum wage, with no tip credit (29 CFR 531.54, US Department of Labor Fact Sheet #15, read 20 October 2026). States set their own rules for tipped staff too: state table. In the UK, use the tronc calculator. Elsewhere, check with your labour office.

Make a staff rota

How it works

  1. 1

    Enter the tips

Type the cash and card tips for the shift. One total in either box works too.

  2. 2

    List who worked

Add each person with their role and hours. The list is saved on this device, so next shift you only change the hours.

  3. 3

Pick a split and send it

By hours, by points per role, or a % to the kitchen then by hours. Copy the result and paste it into your team's WhatsApp group.

Questions owners ask

Answered, plainly.

Add up everyone's hours and divide the tips by that total to get the amount per hour. Each person gets that amount × their hours. With 1,200 in tips and 40 hours worked, each hour is worth 30, so someone who worked 6 hours gets 180.

Each role gets points, for example 10 for a server and 6 for a busser. Multiply each person's points by their hours, add those up, and share the tips in that proportion. The points in the calculator are examples: set your own and write them into your tip policy.

A tip out is when servers pass part of their tips to other staff, such as bussers, bartenders or the kitchen. The "% to kitchen" method works like this: a set share goes to the kitchen first, and the rest is split between front-of-house staff by hours.

It depends on the law where you are. Under US federal rules, cooks and dishwashers can be in a required tip pool only if every worker gets at least the full federal minimum wage with no tip credit (29 CFR 531.54). States can add their own rules. Check yours before you set up the pool.

Under US federal rules, no: the owner, managers and supervisors may not receive tips from a tip pool (29 CFR 531.54). That is why the calculator has no manager role. Rules elsewhere differ, so check with your labour office.

Shares are worked out to the cent and the leftover cents go to the people closest to the next cent, so the total always matches the tips. If you round to whole notes for cash, the small change left goes to the biggest share and is shown next to it.

Yes for the maths. UK businesses also have rules about passing on tips in full and on time, and many use a tronc. Our tronc calculator covers those, with its sources.
