The best QR code ordering systems for US restaurants, scored

Guests scan a code on the table, order from their phone and the order reaches the kitchen with the table number. These eight systems all do that for US restaurants, and they differ in what it costs to start, whether you need their POS, and how long you sign for. Two include QR table ordering on a free plan, and seven take no per-order fee of their own beyond card processing.

7. Toast

US restaurants that want POS, online ordering and QR order-and-pay from one vendor and can sign a multi-year contract.

Toast calls its online ordering commission-free, and Toast Mobile Order & Pay lets guests order and pay at the table. Online ordering is a Digital Storefront add-on whose price Toast doesn't publish, on top of a POS plan from $0 (pay-as-you-go) or $69 a month, and contracts generally run 12 to 36 months.

Guests pay online by card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover), Apple Pay (only in Safari) or a Toast gift card, through Toast's integrated payments at the card-not-present rate. Restaurants can also allow cash for online orders. Guests cannot split an online order across two cards, and express checkout with a Toast account is only available to guests in the US.

Includes: Own ordering website · QR table ordering · Pickup · Delivery orders · Your own drivers · Scheduled orders · Online payments · POS · Loyalty · Marketing tools · Branded app · Delivery-app integration · Multiple locations · Reservations

  • Toast calls its online ordering commission-free: orders flow into the Toast POS the same way in-house orders do, and the restaurant keeps 100% of the revenue with no per-order commission (Toast help centre). Card processing still applies.
  • Delivery can use the restaurant's own drivers, with its own fees and minimums, or, in the US, Toast Delivery Services (Uber Direct or DoorDash Drive drivers) at a flat fee from $6.99 per delivery. Toast Delivery Services has no commitment, can be switched off at any time, and the restaurant chooses how much of the fee to pass on to guests.
  • One platform covers QR order-and-pay at the table (Toast Mobile Order & Pay), scheduled future orders, Toast Tables reservations and waitlist, loyalty, email and SMS marketing, Toast websites, a branded iOS or Android app, and Uber Eats, DoorDash and Grubhub integrations. Most of these are paid add-ons or higher suites (Toast pricing page, Toast Suites Overview).
  • Online ordering is not included in any plan, not even the $0 Starter Kit. It is sold as a Digital Storefront add-on; a website needs the Pro tier and a branded app needs Premium (Toast pricing page, Toast Suites Overview). Toast does not publish the add-on price, and NerdWallet says it is quote-based.
  • Contracts for Toast's software generally run 12 to 36 months (Toast 10-K), and NerdWallet reports contracts of two to three years.
  • Setup costs extra: in the US, $1,000 per on-site installation day, $800 per remote day and $125 for an Online Ordering setup consult (Toast onboarding rates).

  • No extra subscription, setup or commission fee for online ordering: an online menu page, 'no-fee online ordering' and pickup and delivery order types are included in every US restaurant bundle (Clover online ordering and restaurant pricing pages).
  • Online orders fire straight to the kitchen and the Clover POS, and the online menu syncs with the POS menu; Scan to Order QR codes let dine-in guests order and pay from the table, with or without a running tab (Clover online ordering page and help centre).
  • Customers can schedule orders days ahead, redeem Clover loyalty rewards on web orders, and find the restaurant through Order with Google and the Clover consumer app (Clover help centre, online ordering and eCommerce pages).
  • Online ordering only works with a Clover POS device (Station Solo, Station Duo, Mini or Flex) connected to a printer, and not on the Payments Plus or Register Lite plans; US restaurant bundles cost $135–$354 a month for 36 months (Clover online ordering and pricing pages).
  • Online orders are card-not-present payments at a higher rate: 3.5% + 10¢ on Clover.com US restaurant plans, against 2.3% + 10¢ in person (Clover pricing page and help centre).
  • Clover's own delivery option for online orders is DoorDash Drive, in the US only (the listed fulfilment options have no in-house delivery), and discounts and promotions can't be used on online orders (Clover help centre).

How we scored them

Every score, so you can check the order.

Ranked by total score. Menuthere is our product and scores highest on this method (9 of 10), but we never rank our own product first, so it sits second. Ties are broken by the lowest published monthly price to start QR table ordering in the US; a price that isn't published comes last.

When a rival is the better choice

Pick another system over Menuthere if…

  • MENU TIGER: You want more than 50 free orders a month, menus in 19 languages, or your own web POS with inventory tracking, and you don't need delivery by your own drivers.
  • Square Online: You already take payments on Square and want QR orders, menus and stock in the same POS as your in-store sales.
  • UpMenu: You want the store built for you, links to Square, Clover or Toast, or delivery-app orders in the same dashboard.
  • FineDine: You run a hotel or a multilingual venue and want menus in many languages, or orders passed to a POS such as Clover, Revel or Simphony.
  • SpotOn: You're buying a POS anyway and want QR orders, the kitchen display and DoorDash Drive delivery in one US system.
  • Toast: You want one vendor for POS, QR order-and-pay, reservations, loyalty and a branded app, and you're comfortable with a multi-year contract.
  • Clover: You already run a Clover POS and want QR orders to fire straight to it, with running tabs at the table.

How we chose them

What put a system on this list.

  • A system qualifies if its dated profile on Menuthere shows QR table ordering, it is active and sells to US restaurants, and it publishes at least one price.
  • Each system is scored on five criteria worth up to 2 points each (10 in all). The rubric and every score are in the table above, and each point comes from a fact in the system's profile.
  • Card processing is left out of the scores because every system charges it, through its own payments or the restaurant's own processor. Prices are each company's published prices on the date in its profile.
  • Nobody paid to be on this list. Prices change: check each company's own page before you sign.

Questions

Answered, plainly.

A system that gives each table its own QR code. Guests scan it, order from the menu on their phone, and the order reaches your kitchen or POS with the table number, without waiting for a server to take it.

Two systems on this list include QR table ordering on a free plan: Menuthere (50 orders a month, 0% commission) and MENU TIGER (75 orders a month, one store, up to 10 tables). Square Online's ordering page is free, but in the US its QR table ordering needs Square Plus at $49 a month per location.

With Toast, Clover and SpotOn, yes: QR ordering is part of their POS. Menuthere, MENU TIGER, FineDine and UpMenu work without one; orders arrive in their own dashboard, and some connect to a POS you already have.

All eight take online payments. Card fees depend on who processes them: Square charges 2.9% + 30¢ online on its paid plans, Clover 3.5% + 10¢, and SpotOn 3.45% + 15¢ or 3.79% + 20¢; Menuthere and MENU TIGER use the restaurant's own payment account at that provider's rates.

Menuthere (Pro, $39 a month) and UpMenu (Driver App module, $19 a location) include a driver app of their own. Square Online and Toast let your own staff deliver with zones and fees; Clover and SpotOn send delivery to DoorDash Drive.
