- Costs moved: sugar and sweets +5.5%, flour −1.1%, eggs −20.6% (12 months to September 2026, BLS).

How to price cake sizes
A round cake's top area is π × (diameter ÷ 2)², and at the same height the batter, frosting and filling scale with it.
| Round cake | Top area | Times a 6" |
|---|---|---|
| 6 inch | 28.3 sq in | 1.00 |
| 8 inch | 50.3 sq in | 1.78 |
| 10 inch | 78.5 sq in | 2.78 |
Worked example: the template's celebration cake. $35 for 6 inches and $50 for 8.
- 6": $35 ÷ 28.3 = $1.24 per square inch
- 8": $50 ÷ 50.3 = $0.99 per square inch
The 8-inch gives 78% more cake for 43% more money. If your 6-inch costs $9 in ingredients, the 8-inch costs about $16, so the 8-inch still leaves $34 against $26, but your decorating time is the same. Work out your own numbers with the cake price calculator. The $9 is an example. Sugar and sweets cost 5.5% more than a year earlier in September 2026, while flour fell 1.1% and eggs 20.6% (BLS).
Bakery wording rules in the US
| Topic | The rule | What it means on your menu |
|---|---|---|
| "Gluten-free" | The FDA's definition for packaged food: any unavoidable gluten under 20 parts per million. The FDA recommends restaurants that make the claim on menus be consistent with that definition | Only print "gluten-free" if you can keep the item under that limit, which means controlling flour in the air and on shared tools. Otherwise write "made without wheat flour" and explain cross-contact |
| Labels on unwrapped bakes | The FDA Food Code (§ 3-602.11(D)) says bulk, unpackaged bakery products made on your premises don't need a label if you make no health or nutrient claim and no state or local law requires one | A display of loose pastries can go without labels; a box of cookies you pre-pack may need one |
| Allergens | Food codes based on the FDA Food Code ask for written notice of major allergens in unpackaged food (§ 3-602.12) | Wheat, milk and eggs are in most bakes; name tree nuts, peanuts, soy and sesame where used |
| Baking from home | Each state's cottage food law sets what you may sell and how | See our cottage food laws |
For pre-packed items, make labels with the allergen label maker.

FAQs
Is this bakery menu template free?
Yes. Edit it and download it as a PDF or an image for free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
How do I price a bigger cake?
Price by area. An 8-inch round has 1.78 times the top area of a 6-inch, so it uses about 1.78 times the batter and frosting. Charge for that, plus your decorating time, which barely changes with size.
Can I write gluten-free on my bakery menu?
Only if you can keep the item under the FDA's limit of 20 parts per million of gluten. The FDA's rule is for packaged food, but it recommends restaurants that make the claim stay consistent with it.
Do unwrapped baked goods need labels?
Under the FDA Food Code, bulk unpackaged bakery products made on your premises don't need a label if you make no health or nutrient claim and no state or local law requires one. Check your state's food code.
Is there a bakery menu template for Google Docs?
The menu maker downloads PDFs and images. Use the copy-ready layout on this page in Google Docs or Word.
