How to use a free menu template
- Open the template. Each page links straight to its design. It opens filled with example dishes, so you can see the look first.
- Add your dishes. Type them in, or press Paste your menu and paste one dish per line with the price at the end. A line with no price starts a new section. Already on Menuthere? Press Load my Menuthere menu.
- Make it yours. Type your restaurant's name and tagline, upload your logo, and change the colour or heading font. Your dishes stay if you switch template.
- Add your foot line. The line printed at the foot of every page is the place for your address, phone number, an allergy line or a consumer-advisory reminder.
- Download. Get a PDF on US Letter or A4, or a landscape counter board, or an image for social media. You can download once you've typed your restaurant's name or changed a dish.
Print sizes
| Paper | Size | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| US Letter, portrait | 8.5 × 11 in | Table menus in the US and Canada |
| A4 / A5 | 210 × 297 mm / 148 × 210 mm | Outside the US; A5 is the A4 layout at 70.7% |
| Letter or A4 landscape counter board | 11 × 8.5 in / 297 × 210 mm | A board behind the counter or in a window |
| A3 counter board | 420 × 297 mm | The A4 board printed bigger, for a wall or truck window |
A long menu carries on over more pages, up to eight, and no dish is split between two pages.
Copy-ready menu layout for Word or Google Docs
The menu maker downloads PDFs and images, not Word files. If you'd rather work in Word or Google Docs, copy this layout, set the page to US Letter and replace the brackets. Each template page has its own version.
[YOUR RESTAURANT NAME] [Tagline] · [Address] · [Phone] · [Hours]
[SECTION 1, such as STARTERS] [Dish name] .......... $[price] [One-line description. Allergens: milk, egg, wheat]

*Consuming raw or undercooked meats, poultry, seafood, shellfish, or eggs may increase your risk of foodborne illness. Please tell us about any food allergy before you order. Prices do not include sales tax.
What US menus need: the legal lines
Most free templates leave these out. Which ones apply depends on what you serve and where.
| Line | When you need it | Source of the rule |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer advisory (a disclosure plus a reminder footnote) | You serve animal foods raw or undercooked, such as eggs cooked to order, rare burgers, oysters, sushi or ceviche | FDA Food Code 2026, § 3-603.11, adopted by state and local health departments |
| Written allergen notice | Food codes based on the FDA Food Code ask you to tell customers in writing about major food allergens in unpackaged food | Food Code 2026, § 3-602.12(C) |
| Calories next to each item, plus "2,000 calories a day is used for general nutrition advice, but calorie needs vary" | Only chains with 20 or more locations under the same name (or restaurants that register) | 21 CFR 101.11; see our FDA menu labeling guide |
| Default drinks on kids' meals | California restaurants selling a kids' meal with a drink | California SB 1192, since January 1, 2019 |
The FDA counts 9 major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame (the ninth since January 1, 2023). Your city or county health department decides which edition of the Food Code it enforces and how, so check with them before you print.
The Food Code gives three wordings for the advisory reminder. A footnote that says "Regarding the safety of these items, written information is available upon request" is one. Use it only if you can hand over that written information. The other two say "Consuming raw or undercooked meats, poultry, seafood, shellfish, or eggs may increase your risk of foodborne illness", with or without "especially if you have certain medical conditions".
Worked example: one template, three uses
A breakfast diner picks the breakfast template, pastes its 22 dishes and gets a two-page US Letter PDF:
| Use | What they do | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Table menus | Print 40 copies of the PDF at a print shop | Printing only |
| Window board | Switch the paper to the Letter landscape counter board and print 1 | Printing only |
| Online menu | Upload the PDF to the free digital menu creator and print the QR code on a table QR card | $0 |
When the price of eggs moves, they change one price in the maker and download again. US egg prices fell 20.6% in the 12 months to September 2026, while coffee rose 7.1% (Bureau of Labor Statistics), so a menu printed a year ago can be wrong both ways. The menu price calculator shows what a dish should cost on your menu.
Put your menu online and take orders
A printed menu can't take an order. Two free next steps:
- A digital menu with a QR code: upload a photo or the PDF of your menu to the free digital menu creator. It reads your dishes and prices and gives you a page-turning menu with its own link and QR code. Check the prices it has read before you share it. For a QR code on its own, use the menu QR code generator.
- An ordering page with 0% commission: create your free ordering page. The Free plan includes your menu, an ordering website and QR codes, 50 orders a month and 0% commission. Every plan can show 14 allergen tags and calories on each dish. Pre-orders, online payments with Stripe and menus in more than one language are on Lite (US$17 a month).
FAQs
Are these menu templates really free?
Yes. Every template is free to use and download as a PDF or an image, with no sign-up, no email and no watermark. You can make as many menus as you like.
Can I get a menu template for Word or Google Docs?
The menu maker downloads PDFs and images, not Word files. Each template page on this site has a copy-ready text layout that you can paste into Word or Google Docs, set to US Letter and export as a PDF.
What size should a restaurant menu be in the US?
Most US table menus print on US Letter, 8.5 by 11 inches. The menu maker uses Letter for US visitors and can switch to A4, or to a landscape counter board for a wall or window.
Can I change the template after I add my dishes?
Yes. Once you've changed the dishes, they stay when you pick another template. Only the design, colour and font change.
What does a US restaurant menu legally need?
It depends on what you serve. If you serve raw or undercooked animal foods, your health code asks for a consumer advisory. Food codes based on the FDA Food Code ask for written allergen information. Calories are required only for chains with 20 or more locations.
How do I turn my printed menu into a QR code menu?
Upload a photo or the PDF of your menu to the free digital menu creator. It gives you a digital menu with its own link and a QR code to print on table cards.
