What insurance do I need if my staff deliver on their own bikes in the UK?
By the Menuthere editorial team · Last updated
In the UK, driving on public roads needs at least third-party motor insurance. If you employ riders, you also need Employers' Liability cover of at least £5 million.
- Third-party insurance is the legal minimum to drive on public roads in the UK.
- An employer must hold Employers' Liability insurance of at least £5 million from the day they become an employer. Family-only businesses have exceptions.
- Being uninsured can mean fines of £2,500 for each day.
- Ask the rider's insurer, and your own, whether delivering food counts as business use. Do not assume.
- Get the answer in writing before the first delivery.
