QR code menu for restaurants in Malaysia

Updated October 19, 2026

A QR code menu lets customers scan at the table, order on their phone and pay by FPX, GrabPay or card, so orders reach the kitchen without a waiter writing them down. Menuthere gives Malaysian restaurants, cafés and kopitiams a QR menu priced in ringgit, with your own Stripe account taking FPX, GrabPay and card payments and 0% commission on every order. The digital menu, table codes and 50 orders a month are free.

In short

  • Stripe works in Malaysia: domestic cards and FPX are 3% + RM1.00 each, GrabPay is 3%. You choose which ones to switch on.
  • Service tax on F&B is 6%, not the 8% general rate, and restaurants register once taxable services pass RM1.5 million a year (Royal Malaysian Customs).
  • Chinese and Tamil are in the Lite language button. Bahasa Malaysia isn't, so write it yourself.
  • E-invoicing: Menuthere doesn't send invoices to LHDN's MyInvois. Keep that on your POS if you're in scope.
  • Free plan: digital menu, table QR codes and up to 50 orders a month.

Service tax: who charges it and how much

Royal Malaysian Customs' MySST registration page sets the threshold for restaurants, caterers and food courts at RM1,500,000 of taxable services a year. The service tax rate rose to 8% from 1 March 2024 for most services, but F&B stays at 6%.

Your annual F&B salesService tax on the bill
Below RM1.5 millionNone. Leave tax off in Menuthere.
RM1.5 million or more (registered)6%. Set it under Settings → Payments & tax.

What Menuthere shows: one tax rate for the store, added at checkout when dish prices are entered before tax, or shown as included if you mark dishes tax inclusive. The tax line is labeled GST or VAT; there is no SST label yet. If you're registered, your official invoice should come from your POS. See Tax: GST and VAT.

E-invoicing (MyInvois): LHDN's e-invoice guideline brought businesses with turnover up to RM5 million in from 1 January 2026, exempts those with annual turnover below RM3 million, and starts businesses that reached RM3 million or more in YA2023 to 2025 from 1 July 2026. Menuthere isn't connected to MyInvois.

Worked example: breakfast for two in Petaling Jaya

Two nasi lemak at RM12.90 and two teh tarik at RM3.50. The restaurant is registered for service tax and enters prices before tax.

LinePaid by FPXPaid by GrabPay
Food and drinksRM32.80RM32.80

Stripe feeRM2.04 (3% + RM1.00)RM1.04 (3%)

For small bills, GrabPay costs less than FPX or a card because it has no fixed RM1.00 fee. A restaurant below the RM1.5 million threshold charges no service tax, so the customer pays RM32.80.

How Malaysians pay at the table

Bank Negara Malaysia reported that DuitNow QR more than doubled to 360 million transactions worth RM14.6 billion in 2023, and PayNet counted 8.44 billion digital payment transactions in 2025. Customers are used to scanning to pay. With Menuthere:

Menuthere's checkout doesn't fix the payment methods, so Stripe shows the ones you enable. You can offer online payment on dine-in and keep cash for takeaway, per order type. See connect Stripe and payment options per order type.

Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese, Tamil and English

On Lite, the language button translates your menu into Chinese (Simplified) and Tamil, among other languages. Bahasa Malaysia isn't on the list, so the best set-up for most Malaysian restaurants is:

  1. Write each dish in Bahasa Malaysia or the name customers know (nasi lemak, roti canai, char kuey teow) as the main name.
  2. Add an English or Chinese name as the dish's second name, on any plan. It shows on the line below.
  3. Turn on the language button for Chinese and Tamil if your customers use them.

See second names and menu in several languages.

Halal: JAKIM says halal certification remains voluntary, a policy the Cabinet kept on 18 September 2024. Menuthere has a halal mark you can switch on for each dish. Only switch it on when you can back the claim, for example with your JAKIM certificate.

Busy hours: keep track of every table

At lunch, a QR menu means 20 tables can order at once. Menuthere's table list shows which tables are occupied, with the order number and stage, and frees a table when the order is completed. See see which tables are occupied.

FAQs

Can customers pay by FPX from a QR menu in Malaysia?

Yes, on Lite with your own Stripe account, once you switch FPX on in Stripe. Stripe charges 3% + RM1.00 per FPX payment.

What service tax do Malaysian restaurants charge?

F&B service tax is 6%, not the 8% general rate. Restaurants register once their taxable services reach RM1.5 million a year.

Can the QR menu switch into Bahasa Malaysia?

Not automatically. The language button offers Chinese and Tamil but not Bahasa Malaysia, so write your menu in Bahasa Malaysia and add English as a second name.

No. Menuthere isn't connected to LHDN's MyInvois. If you're in scope for e-invoicing, issue invoices from your POS.

Is the QR code menu free in Malaysia?

Yes. The Free plan includes the digital menu, table QR codes and up to 50 orders a month. Online payments and unlimited orders start on Lite at US$17 a month.

Can I mark dishes as halal on the QR menu?

Yes, there's a halal mark for each dish on every plan. JAKIM says certification is voluntary, so only use the mark when you can back it up.
