Worth knowing
Competition Commission. Its 2023 inquiry into online platforms found that Mr D and Uber Eats charged independent restaurants 30–45% more commission than chains on average in mid-2022, and required Mr D to give independents promotional rebates and advertising credits. It sets no cap on commission.
Mr D grew out of Mr Delivery, founded in Cape Town in 1992, and was bought by takealot.com in 2014. It now trades as MRD.com, delivers groceries as well as food, and says more than 12,000 businesses use it.
The Competition Commission cited publicly reported figures of 20% for one restaurant chain against 30% for an independent restaurant.
