What is 3-D Secure and do I need it for online food orders?
Updated 6 October 2026
3-D Secure is the extra card check, usually a bank code or app approval, that meets strong customer authentication rules. Stripe Checkout handles it automatically.
- EU: the rules have applied since 14 September 2019 when your business, your customer and the card are in the EEA.
- UK: the same rule applies, with a deadline of 14 March 2022.
- Small payments: the EU can skip the check up to €30 and the UK up to £25, within cumulative limits.
- Stripe: Stripe Checkout and the Payment Intents API handle it. Older Charges API setups may see many declines.
- Fraud: 3-D Secure moves liability for fraudulent card payments away from you.
Let your payment gateway handle card checks
Menuthere takes online payments through your own payment account: card and UPI on Stripe outside India, or Razorpay and Easebuzz in India. Menuthere charges 0% commission, and the gateway handles the card checks.
