Can a WhatsApp bot take food orders?
Updated 30 September 2026
Yes, on the WhatsApp Business API. A bot can send your menu, take the order and send updates. The free Business app can't run your own bot.
- A bot needs the API. If you aren't a developer, you get it through a Business Solution Provider.
- Bots can send reply buttons, lists and product catalogs, so customers tap their choices instead of typing.
- Meta's policy allows automated replies in the 24-hour window if you offer a clear way to reach a person, such as staff, phone or email.
- Bulk or automated messaging from the normal WhatsApp app is against WhatsApp's terms.
- From 1 October 2026, bot replies in the 24-hour window are free for 1,000 a month per number, then charged at the utility rate.
A WhatsApp ordering bot on your own number
Menuthere runs the WhatsApp Business API and a bot on your restaurant's own number. Customers send “Hi”, get an Order Now button that opens your menu already signed in, and get order updates in the same chat.
