The short answer

What an ordering system is, and what it costs you

An online ordering system for restaurants in the UK is your own ordering page plus a dashboard. Customers choose takeaway, delivery or dine-in from a link or a table QR code on their phone. You keep the money and the customer details. The menu opens in the phone's browser, so nobody downloads an app.

Your own system charges the card processor and takes no commission. Stripe's standard UK card rate is 1.5% + 20p. The delivery apps publish UK rates of 13% to 35% of the order, plus 20% VAT on the fee. You still have to meet UK rules yourself: allergen information, VAT-inclusive prices and no card surcharge. The sections below give the figures and the sources.

What you pay the apps today

What Just Eat, Deliveroo and Uber Eats charge UK restaurants

Rates come from each app's own pages. Most owners run their own ordering next to the apps: the apps bring customers and couriers, your own page serves the customers you already have. We found no UK cap on app commission. Full fee lists: Uber Eats UK, Just Eat UK, Deliveroo UK.

Illustration, arithmetic only: 300 orders a month at £25 is £7,500 of sales. The fee plus VAT is £2,700 at 30%, £1,260 at 14% and £1,170 at 13%. The same sales on Stripe's standard UK cards cost £172.50 (see the payments section), with no Menuthere commission. This assumes every order is paid by card and ignores your real card mix. A VAT-registered restaurant can usually reclaim the VAT on an app's fee. Deliveroo was bought by DoorDash (completed 2 October 2025) and Just Eat Takeaway.com by Prosus (completed October 2025). Neither announcement mentioned restaurant terms.

Order types

Takeaway, collection, delivery and dine-in from one menu

Menuthere calls collection orders Takeaway orders. Customers open your menu in their phone's browser and order without installing anything.

Delivery with your own drivers
Customers type their address. The free plan has basic delivery zones and fees. Lite adds fees by distance and delivery areas drawn on a map. Pro adds your own riders app with live tracking. Menuthere does not book Stuart, Uber Direct or Deliveroo Express for you.
Dine-in and table QR ordering
Print a QR code for each table. A dashboard setting can check the diner is at the restaurant before an order goes through. A second order from the same table joins the open bill. More in table ordering.
Pre-orders and scheduled orders
On Lite, customers pick a collection or delivery time. The same plan covers table slot booking.
Kitchen and counter
Orders ring on the partner app (Android and iPhone) until someone accepts them. Auto-accept is available. Print the kitchen ticket and the bill from the dashboard. Staff logins are unlimited.
A menu that stays in step
Sizes and add-ons are on every plan. Import your menu from a photo, a PDF, an Instagram or Google link, or from GloriaFood. Mark items out of stock when the kitchen runs out.

Payments

Taking card payments with Stripe in the UK

Online card payments on Menuthere run on your own Stripe account, connected from Lite. Stripe's hosted Checkout page takes the payment and Stripe pays out to your bank. Menuthere takes 0% and adds no per-order fee. On the free plan you take cash, pay on pickup, your own payment link or bank details.

Stripe has no setup or monthly fee. It adds 2% if it converts currency and charges £20 per dispute. Its first payout typically comes 7 to 14 days after the first live payment, then UK payouts follow Stripe's schedule (7 calendar days at first, 3 business days by default). Stripe Checkout handles 3D Secure. You may not charge customers extra for paying by card, so build the fee into your menu prices. UK rules your online menu has to follow

General information, not legal advice. Check your own position with your local authority, HMRC or your accountant. Sources checked on 1 October 2026.

Allergens: 14 to declare, at two stages
The 14 are celery, cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, mustard, peanuts, sesame, soybeans, sulphites (above 10 parts per million) and tree nuts. For food sold online, the Food Standards Agency says to give the information before the customer completes the purchase and again at delivery. Writing it down at both stages is advised. The guidance covers England, Wales and Northern Ireland (updated 17 July 2026). Local authorities enforce it. In Menuthere, write the allergens into each dish's description. The dashboard also has 12 allergen tags, but they miss celery, lupin, molluscs and sulphites, and they show only on the Default and Compact menu layouts. Menuthere does not check allergen information for you.
Calories: bigger businesses, England only
The Calorie Labelling (Out of Home Sector) (England) Regulations 2021 cover businesses with 250 or more employees, from 6 April 2022. Online menus and delivery apps are in scope. The menu must say "adults need around 2000 kcal a day". The fixed penalty is £2,500 (DHSC guidance). Most independent restaurants are below the threshold. This page does not cover Scotland or Wales. Menuthere has no calorie field, so a covered business puts calories in the dish name or description.
Prices: pounds, VAT included, delivery in the total
The Price Marking (Food and Drink Services) Order 2003 says food and drink sold for take-away must show prices including VAT, in sterling. Any additional or minimum charge must be as prominent as the food prices. The CMA's price transparency guidance under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 treats a QR or digital menu as an invitation to purchase. It says mandatory charges such as delivery belong in the headline total. Menuthere shows the price you enter, in £.
VAT on takeaway
Hot takeaway food is standard-rated at 20%. Cold takeaway food is generally zero-rated (GOV.UK VAT Notice 709/1, updated 8 June 2026). Ask your accountant how this applies to your menu and your delivery charge. Menuthere does not do VAT accounting.
Card surcharges and tips
You may not charge extra for paying by card or by a PayPal-type service. The ban has applied since 13 January 2018. Tips paid by card generally have to be passed on to staff under the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023, and its code of practice has applied since 1 October 2024.

Find your business on Google
Search for it on the homepage, or add it by hand. Your Google listing fills in the store details.

Bring in your menu
Import from a photo, a PDF, an Instagram link or a Google link. Moving off GloriaFood? Use Import from GloriaFood in the menu screen. Sizes, add-on groups and tags come across, and the import tells you what did not. More in GloriaFood alternative.

Turn on your order types
Switch on takeaway, delivery and dine-in. Set your hours, delivery radius and delivery fee.

Add allergens and check prices
Write all 14 allergens against each dish where they apply. Check that every price includes VAT.

Choose how customers pay
Start with cash or pay on pickup. On Lite, connect your own Stripe account to take cards.

Share the link and print the QR code
Put the link on your Google Business Profile (how to add your own ordering link). Print the table QR codes (QR table ordering step by step). Orders ring on the partner app.

Keep the apps if they still pay
Menuthere does not pull Just Eat, Deliveroo or Uber Eats orders into its dashboard, so those orders stay on the apps' own tablets. Read your agreement before you price differently. Deliveroo's Value Programme compares your Deliveroo prices with your lowest takeaway, dine-in or collection price.

Questions owners ask

Answered, plainly.

It depends on whether you want a free start, your own domain, a till integration or a managed service on a contract. Menuthere has a free plan with 50 orders a month and 0% commission. Storekit, Square Online, Flipdish, Slerp, Foodhub, OrderYOYO, Epos Now and Toast are in the table above. See the ranked list of UK systems.

Uber Eats publishes 30% when it delivers (33% on Uber One member orders), 13% when you deliver and 13% on pickup. Just Eat publishes 30% when it delivers and 14% with your own drivers, with no separate collection rate. Deliveroo does not publish its rates. The one rate in its terms is 35% for Marketplace+ restaurants using Deliveroo riders. All three add 20% VAT to the fee.

We found none. No UK commission cap or delivery-app rule for restaurants turned up in our research in September 2026, and we found no action by the CMA on restaurant commissions. That is an absence of evidence, so read your own agreement and check GOV.UK for changes.

Yes, with limits. Menuthere's free plan includes 50 orders a month, QR codes, takeaway, delivery and table ordering, and ordering pauses after 50 until the 1st. Storekit's Basic plan is free but charges its own card rate on each paid order. Square Online's free plan charges 1.4% + 25p on UK cards. GloriaFood's free plan closes on 30 April 2027. Stripe's standard UK rate is 1.5% + 20p for standard UK cards and 2.8% + 20p for premium UK cards. EEA cards cost 2.5% + 20p and international cards 3.15% + 20p. There is no setup or monthly fee, and a dispute costs £20. Menuthere adds no commission on top. You connect your own Stripe account from Lite.

No. Since 13 January 2018 UK retailers cannot charge extra for paying by consumer credit or debit card, or by PayPal-type systems. Build the cost into your menu prices instead.

For food sold online you must tell customers about the 14 listed allergens before they complete the purchase, and again when the food is delivered. The Food Standards Agency advises writing it down at both stages. Local authorities enforce the rules. In Menuthere you write the allergens against each dish and can add tags for 12 common ones.
