Do I need a CFDI to sell online at my restaurant?
By the Menuthere editorial team · Updated
Selling online does not by itself require you to issue a CFDI to every customer: many orders close with a simplified receipt. But if a customer asks for an invoice, you must issue the CFDI with your tax ID (RFC), using billing software/a PAC or the SAT portal. Menuthere does not issue CFDIs: it captures the order and payment; you issue the invoice with your billing system or POS. Updated October 2026.
- Selling online doesn't by itself require a CFDI for every customer (many orders go with a receipt).
- If the customer asks for an invoice, you must issue the CFDI with your RFC, under SAT rules.
- The CFDI is issued with authorised billing software / a PAC or the SAT portal, not the ordering site.
- Menuthere doesn't issue CFDIs: it captures the order and payment; you invoice separately.
- A POS with invoicing (e.g. Parrot, Soft Restaurant) does issue CFDIs; Menuthere runs alongside it for online orders.
Menuthere captures the order; you invoice separately
Menuthere gives you an ordering page, a QR menu and WhatsApp ordering on your own number, at 0% commission and a Free plan at $0. It doesn't issue CFDIs: when a customer asks for an invoice, you generate it with your billing software or POS, using your RFC.
When do I have to issue a CFDI for an online order?
When the customer asks for an invoice. If they don't, the order can close with a simplified receipt, depending on your tax regime. But the SAT requires you to issue the CFDI with your RFC when asked, whether the order came through your site, an app or the counter. The sales channel doesn't change that: the invoice depends on being requested, not on where you sold.
| Task | Your ordering site does it | Your billing / POS does it |
|---|---|---|
| Receive the order | Yes | No |
| Charge the customer | Yes (gateway) | No |
| Issue the CFDI with your RFC | No | Yes (PAC / software / SAT portal) |
What do I issue the CFDI with?
With SAT-authorised billing software or a PAC, with your POS if it includes invoicing, or with the SAT portal. You need your RFC, your e.firma or Digital Seal Certificate, and the customer's tax details. A restaurant POS with CFDI (such as Parrot or Soft Restaurant) can stamp the invoice; Menuthere doesn't issue it, it only captures the order and payment.
- SAT-authorised billing software or a PAC.
- Your POS, if it includes CFDI invoicing (e.g. Parrot or Soft Restaurant).
- The SAT's free invoicing portal.
- Your tax details: RFC, Digital Seal Certificate or e.firma.
Who this is a good fit for
- Restaurants that want to sell online at 0% commission and invoice separately on request.
- Businesses that already have billing software or a POS with CFDI and want to add their own orders.
- Owners who want to start their direct channel free and keep their invoicing as it is.
Who this is not for
- Those who need the same tool to stamp the CFDI: that needs billing software or a POS with invoicing, not an ordering site.
- Those who want to delegate all accounting: that is your accountant or PAC's job, not the ordering platform's.
Common follow-up questions
If I sell through my site, must I invoice every order?
Not because you sell online. If the customer doesn't ask for an invoice, the order can go with a receipt; if they do, you must issue the CFDI with your RFC, just as at the counter.
Does Menuthere generate the invoice for me?
No. Menuthere captures the order and payment but doesn't issue CFDIs. You generate the invoice with your billing software, your PAC or a POS with invoicing, using your RFC.
Can I use Menuthere alongside my invoicing system?
Yes. Menuthere captures online orders with no commission and your billing software or POS issues the CFDI when the customer asks for it. They are separate layers that work together.
