How do I take food orders on Instagram?
By the Menuthere editorial team · Last updated
Through your own ordering link. Instagram has no checkout of its own for food, and its Order food button only works with a listed partner, mostly delivery apps. Put your link first in your profile, and point stories, posts and DM replies at it.
- Profile: up to five links, added in the app. Put your ordering link first and call it "Order here".
- Stories and posts: the Food orders sticker goes to a partner, so send people to the link in your profile: "order from the link in our bio".
- DMs: reply with the link, so the order is placed on your menu instead of typed into a chat.
- Order food button: needs a business or creator account and a partner from Instagram's list for your country.
- Orders placed on your own link carry no commission. Your payment gateway still charges its fee.
One ordering link for your Instagram profile
Menuthere gives your restaurant its own ordering link, like menuthere.com/your-name. Copy it from the Share screen into your Instagram profile and DM replies. Orders on it carry 0% commission.
How do Instagram orders reach you?
- 1
Add your link to your profile
In the app, go to Edit profile, Links, Add external link. You can add up to five, and the web version can't add them. Put the ordering link first.
- 2
Point every post at it
Links in posts and reels aren't clickable for most accounts, so say "order from the link in our bio", in stories too.
- 3
Answer DMs with the link
When someone asks "can I order?", send the link. They pick dishes and pay on your menu, and the order comes straight to you.
- 4
Use one link everywhere
Use the same link on your Google profile and WhatsApp, so customers always land on one menu.
Instagram is the shop window and the link is the till. For the website and WhatsApp sides, see what a zero commission ordering system is.
Instagram ordering questions
Do I need a business account for Instagram food ordering?
For the Order food button and sticker, yes: a business or creator account, not a personal one. For a link in your profile, any account works.
How does the Food orders sticker work in stories?
It sends viewers to your partner's website to order delivery or takeaway, like the Order food button. You can add one sticker to each story. Viewers can reshare it, and you aren't told when they do.
Can customers pay inside an Instagram or Facebook Shop?
No. Since September 2025, Shops on Facebook and Instagram send customers to the business's own website to pay, and Meta has discontinued checkout inside the apps. A Shop is a showcase; the order happens on your site.
How many links can I put in my Instagram bio?
Up to five, added from the app. Anyone can see them, on or off Instagram. Put the ordering link first, then your WhatsApp and Google reviews links, each with a clear name.
Can I put a clickable ordering link in a post or reel?
Only with Meta One's paid Advanced plan, which allows links in up to 4 posts and 4 reels a month and is still in limited testing. Links can't be edited after sharing.
Should I take orders in Instagram DMs or on WhatsApp?
On neither by hand, if you can avoid it: send the ordering link. Instagram gives a business a 24-hour window to reply to most messages, up to 7 days after a click-to-message ad. If you take orders in chat, WhatsApp ordering is built for it.
