Online ordering for meal prep: weekly menus with a cut-off
Updated October 25, 2026
Meal prep runs on a weekly rhythm: publish the menu, take orders until a cut-off, cook once, hand everything over on a fixed day. An ordering link makes that rhythm run itself. Customers browse this week's meals, order before your cut-off, pick up or get delivery on your prep day, and pay up front. With Menuthere you keep 0% commission, take unlimited orders on Lite, and the money lands in your own Stripe account. This page is honest about the one gap meal-preppers ask about: recurring subscription billing.
In short
- An order cut-off. Pre-orders with a deadline (say, orders by Thursday 6pm for Sunday) so you cook to an exact count.
- Fixed handover days. Open collection or delivery only on your prep days.
- Cook to the order. You know the week's numbers before you shop, so there's less waste.
- Honest on subscriptions. Menuthere takes one-off orders each week; it doesn't auto-bill a customer every week. The section below has the workaround.
The weekly cycle, run from one link
| Day | What happens |
|---|---|
| Monday | You publish this week's menu on your link |
| Mon–Thu | Customers order and pay for the week |
| Thursday 6pm | Order cut-off: ordering closes for the week |
| Friday | You shop and prep to the exact order count |
| Sunday | Fixed collection slots and/or your own delivery run |
Everything after "publish the menu" is handled by the ordering page: the cut-off closes orders for you, the handover-day slots keep pickups tidy, and the order list tells you precisely how many of each meal to cook.
The order cut-off is the key feature
Meal prep lives or dies on cooking the right quantity. Use pre-orders with a deadline:
- Set the handover day (Sunday) and the cut-off (Thursday 6pm). After the cut-off, ordering for that cycle closes automatically.
- Offer collection slots on the handover day (for example, Sunday 11am–2pm in 30-minute windows), so pickups don't pile up.
- Or run your own delivery on the handover day, with a radius and a fee.
A worked example: cut-off Thursday 6pm, handover Sunday. By Friday morning you open the order list and see 18 high-protein boxes, 11 vegan boxes and 7 low-carb boxes. You shop and cook to that, with almost no guesswork and little waste.
Build the week's menu
- Each meal is a dish with its own photo, price and description.
- Add-ons for portion size (regular/large), protein swap, or extras.
- Nutrition and allergens. Mark calories and allergens on each meal; meal-prep customers care about macros, so put protein/carb/fat in the description if you track them.
- Sell boxes of 5 or 10 as their own items for customers who buy a week at a time.
For pricing to a target food cost, use the menu price calculator. The business side (kitchen, licensing, packaging) is covered in how to start a meal prep business.
The subscription question, answered honestly
This is the common ask, so here's the straight answer. Menuthere doesn't auto-bill a customer on a recurring schedule. Each week is a fresh order the customer places and pays for. In practice, meal-preppers handle it two ways:
- Weekly re-order. Customers reorder each week from the same link; a saved cart and a reminder (email, or a WhatsApp order update) make it quick. Regular customers who sign in can reorder in a tap.
- Recurring billing outside Menuthere. If you need true "charge me every Sunday" subscriptions, set those up in Stripe directly and use Menuthere for the one-off and trial orders.
If recurring billing is central to your model, know that it lives in Stripe, not in the ordering page.
Handover and the kitchen
- New orders ring on the Menuthere app until accepted; keep it open.
- Auto-print each order with the meals, add-ons and the customer's handover slot.
- The order list by cut-off is your prep sheet: totals per meal, ready to cook from.
- A collection code or name keeps Sunday handovers moving.
The fee math on a $65 weekly box
A customer buys a 5-meal box at $65, paid online:
| Channel | How it's charged | What you keep |
|---|---|---|
| Your own link + Stripe | 2.9% + 30¢ = $2.19 | $62.81 |
| A delivery app at 25% | $16.25 commission | $48.75 |
Meal prep is low-margin and high-volume, so a 25% cut is brutal. And delivery apps aren't built for a once-a-week handover anyway. Your own link costs the card fee only, and the weekly customer stays yours. The broader case is on commission-free online ordering; own delivery is compared on in-house delivery for restaurants.
Honest limits
- No recurring subscription billing. Each week is a fresh order; true auto-billing lives in Stripe.
- No built-in macro/meal-planner tool. Put nutrition in the description or the nutrition fields; there's no "build your week by macros" wizard.
- No ready-made Square, Toast or Clover link. Orders arrive in the Menuthere dashboard and print from there.
If your brand runs 20 or more locations under the same name, US menu-labeling rules cover online menus; see FDA menu labeling requirements. Catering-style bulk orders are covered on online ordering for catering.
Set up weekly ordering for a meal-prep business
- Create your store and add this week's meals with photos, prices and nutrition.
- Set a cut-off (for example Thursday 6pm) with pre-orders for the handover day.
- Open handover slots for collection, and/or set your own delivery radius and fee.
- Add box options (5 or 10 meals) and portion/protein add-ons.
- Connect Stripe and take payment up front.
- Turn on order alerts or auto-print, and use the order list as your prep sheet.
- Share the link and remind customers each week before the cut-off.
Take the week's orders on your own link, 0% commission.
Frequently asked questions
Can I set an order cut-off for meal prep?
Yes. Use pre-orders with a deadline, such as orders by Thursday 6pm for Sunday handover. After the cut-off, ordering for that cycle closes automatically, so you cook to an exact count.
Can customers pick up on a fixed day?
Yes. Open collection slots only on your handover day, for example Sunday 11am–2pm in 30-minute windows, so pickups are spread out. You can also run your own delivery on that day with a radius and a fee.
Does Menuthere handle weekly subscription billing?
No. Each week is a fresh order the customer places and pays for; Menuthere doesn't auto-bill on a recurring schedule. Customers reorder each week, or you set up true recurring charges in Stripe directly.
How does meal prep ordering reduce food waste?
Because ordering closes at a cut-off, you know the exact numbers before you shop. The order list totals each meal, so you cook to the order instead of guessing, which cuts waste.
What does online ordering cost a meal-prep business?
The Free plan takes up to 50 orders a month at 0% commission; Lite is $17 a month for unlimited orders and pre-orders with a cut-off. You pay only the card fee, about 2.9% + 30¢, so a $65 box nets about $62.81.
