Online ordering for food trucks: cut the line at the window
Updated October 25, 2026
A food truck's whole business is a short, intense window: a lunch rush at a moving pitch. The line is the limit, and every person who sees it too long walks off. Order-ahead fixes that: the line orders from their phone, you make it, and they collect a named bag at the hatch. With Menuthere it's free to start, there's 0% commission, and you flip online and offline and change today's location in a tap. This page is honest about the one thing trucks need to watch: card fees on small tickets.
In short
- Order-ahead for pickup. The line orders and pays from a QR code on the truck; you call the name at the hatch.
- Online/offline in a tap. Flip ordering on when you open the hatch, off when you sell out or move on.
- Show today's pitch. Tell customers where you are today and when you open.
- Small-ticket honesty. On a $9 order the card's 30¢ is 3.3%, so the fee matters; the section below shows the math.
The lunch-rush problem order-ahead solves
Picture a 90-minute lunch window. Twenty people in line, each waiting to reach the window, read the menu, decide, and pay. Half of them would have ordered from their phone five minutes earlier if they could. Order-ahead lets them:
- Scan a QR code on the truck, a sign, or your Instagram.
- Order and pay on their phone while they walk over.
- Collect a named bag at the hatch, no reading the menu at the window.
You make more covers in the same window, the window line is shorter, and nobody walks off.
Online/offline and today's pitch
A truck isn't open fixed hours at a fixed address, so two controls matter:
- Open/closed switch. Flip ordering online when you open the hatch and offline the moment you sell out or pack up, so no one orders food you can't make.
- Average prep time. Show "about 10 minutes" at checkout so order-ahead customers arrive at the right moment.
- Today's location. Put where you are today and your hours on the store, and share the link on social so regulars find the pitch.
Build a fast truck menu
Truck menus are short on purpose, so set them up to move fast:
- A handful of dishes, each with a photo and price.
- Add-ons for protein, spice level and extras, marked Required or capped so the grill never guesses.
- Sell-out toggles. Run out of brisket at 1pm? Switch it off in a tap and back on tomorrow.
- Allergen marks on each dish.
For pricing to a target food cost, use the menu price calculator and the food truck menu template.
At the hatch
- New orders ring on the Menuthere app on a phone until accepted; keep it in the truck.
- Auto-accept and auto-print (with a small printer) keep a one-person truck moving.
- The ticket shows the name, items and choices, so you call "Order for Sam" and hand over the right bag.
- No reading the window menu for order-ahead customers, which is the whole point.
The small-ticket math
Truck orders are small, so the fixed part of a card fee matters. On a $9 order, Stripe's fee is $9 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $0.56, which is 6.2% of the order, because the 30¢ is 3.3% on its own. On a bigger $25 family order it's $1.03, or 4.1%. Compare that to a delivery app, which isn't built for a truck at a pitch anyway: a 25% rate on the $9 order is $2.25.
The takeaway: order-ahead on your own link keeps nearly all of each small ticket, and the saving grows as orders get bigger. To lift the ticket, suggest a drink and a side with each main.
Honest limits
- No real-time truck tracker for customers. You update today's pitch in the store text; there's no live map of the truck.
- No built-in event/booking system. For private catering gigs, take those as pre-orders or quote separately; see how to start a food truck business.
- No ready-made Square, Toast or Clover link. Orders arrive in the Menuthere dashboard and print from there.
In-shop-style scan-to-order at the window is covered on QR code menu for food trucks. If you want your own-branded truck app with push notifications for "we're here today", that's the food truck ordering app on the Branded App plan. The broader segment page is food trucks.

Frequently asked questions
Can customers order ahead at a food truck?
Yes. The line scans a QR code on the truck, orders and pays on their phone, and collects a named bag at the hatch. That shortens the window line and lets you make more covers in the same lunch rush.
How do I stop orders coming in when I've sold out?
Use the open/closed switch. Flip ordering online when you open the hatch and offline the moment you sell out or move on, so nobody orders food you can't make. You can also switch off a single sold-out item.
Can I tell customers where the truck is today?
Yes. Put today's location and hours in your store and share the link on social, so regulars know which pitch you're at. There's no live map, but the store text is quick to update each day.
Is online ordering worth it on small food-truck tickets?
Usually yes. On a $9 order the card fee is about $0.56, or 6.2%, versus about $2.25 on a 25% delivery app. The saving grows on bigger orders, and the customer stays yours. Suggesting a drink and a side lifts the ticket.
Is it free for a food truck?
To start, yes. The Free plan takes up to 50 orders a month at 0% commission; Lite is $17 a month for unlimited orders. You pay only the card fee, about 2.9% + 30¢, on paid orders.
