Shifts, cash drawer, pay in and pay out in the POS
A shift starts with the cash in the drawer and ends with a count. In between, Pay in and Pay out record cash that isn't a sale, the X report shows the shift so far, and Close shift compares what you counted with what should be there and prints the Z report.

Run a shift
Step 1: Open the shift
On Shifts, press Open shift and type the Opening cash (float). The top bar shows Shift #N.
Step 2: Pay in and pay out
Press Pay in (change from the bank, owner top-up, a customer paying a due) or Pay out (supplier payment, petty cash, staff advance, bank deposit). A reason is needed; a manager isn't.
Step 3: Check with the X report
X report prints the shift so far. Nothing is reset.
Step 4: Close the shift
Press Close shift (a manager). Count the cash by note, see Expected against Counted (Short or Over), add a note, then Close shift & print Z or Close without printing.
The screen shows Opening cash, + Pay in, − Pay out and Expected in the drawer, and the last 20 Closed shifts with their Z report. Bills still open at closing stay open into the next shift.
Require a shift before billing
Settings › Till › Require an open shift is on to start with: nobody can bill until a shift is open, and the till asks for the opening cash. Switch it off if you don't count cash by shift.
The cash drawer
- Plug the drawer into the bill printer. With Settings › Till › Open the drawer on cash on (the default), it opens when a bill is paid in cash.
- The Drawer button under the bill opens Cash drawer: a switch for Open cash drawer on cash payment, a Recent log, and Open drawer to open it with no sale.
- Open drawer asks a reason (Change for a note, Cash count, Petty cash, Refund) and a manager.
