How order numbers work
Each paid order gets an invoice number that counts 1, 2, 3 through your day and restarts at 1 after midnight in your store's time. Unpaid online orders get a D number until they are paid. Customers see a short order code, not your invoice number.

The numbers you see
| Number | Where you see it | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Invoice No | The first column of the Orders list, the order's heading, the bill and the kitchen ticket | Your own running number for the day: 1, 2, 3 and so on. It restarts at 1 after midnight in your store's timezone. |
| Order ID | The Orders list on wide screens and the order's information | A short code made of the first 8 characters of the order's full ID. The last four are shown in bold because staff use them to tell orders apart. |
| Full order ID | Order information, with a copy button | The complete ID. Quote it when you contact support. |
| D1, D2, D3 | Dropped orders | A draft number for an online order that has not been paid. It becomes a real invoice number when the payment arrives. |
| The code on the customer's order page | The customer's order page and messages | The same short code as the Order ID. Your invoice number is never shown to customers. |
Good to knowOnline orders, POS bills and orders paid after checkout all draw from the same daily count, so two orders never share a number. A number can be missing if an order fails after it was given one. A gap is harmless. A table order's second round joins the first order and uses no new number.
Questions
Why is my order number back at 1?
The count restarts at midnight in your store's timezone. Check your timezone in Settings → Store details → Currency & Language. See Currency and timezone.
Why do dropped orders show D1 and D2?
Unpaid checkouts have their own numbers so they never leave holes in your invoice run. See Dropped orders.
Which number should I give a customer who calls?
Ask for the short order code on their order page. It matches the Order ID in your dashboard, and you can search for it. See Search and filter orders.
