Tips and service charge
Two optional extras for the checkout, both off until you switch them on: a service charge worked out as a percentage of the food, which customers can remove, and tips, where customers choose No tip, one of your percentages or their own amount. Tips are never taxed. The service charge is untaxed, except in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman, where your tax is added on top of it. Both show on the bill as their own line. They aren't available in India.

Add a service charge
Step 1: Switch it on
Go to Settings → Payments & tax, open Tips & service charge and switch on Add a service charge.
In the dashboardSettingsPayments & taxTips & service charge
Step 2: Set the rate and the name
Enter the percentage in Service charge, up to 50%. Name on the bill starts as "Service charge (optional)", and the rate is added after it, so the bill reads Service charge (optional) 12.5%.
Step 3: Pick the order types
Under Add it to, choose Dine-in, Takeaway and Delivery. Only Dine-in is picked at first. Press Save.
| Food total after discounts | Rate | Service charge |
|---|---|---|
| £40.00 | 12.5% | £5.00 |
| £33.33 | 12.5% | £4.17 |
The service charge is worked out on the dishes after money-off discounts. Tax, delivery, packaging and other charges are not part of it. No tax is added to it, except in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman, where your tax percentage is added on top by default. Charge tax on the service charge turns that on or off for your store. On the bill, that tax shows on its own line, such as VAT on service charge (5%). At checkout it shows in its own card, marked optional, with a Remove button. A customer who removes it can tap Add back.
Let customers add a tip
Step 1: Switch it on
On the same tab, switch on Let customers add a tip.
In the dashboardSettingsPayments & taxTips & service charge
Step 2: Choose the percentages
Type up to four percentages in Tip percentages, separated by commas. They start as 10, 15 and 20.
Step 3: Pick the order types
Under Offer tips on, choose the order types. All three are picked at first. Press Save.
At checkout the customer sees Add a tip with No tip, your percentages and Custom. No tip is selected until they choose. A percentage tip is worked out on the food after discounts, like the service charge. A custom tip can be any amount up to the food total. Tips are never taxed.
On the bill and in payments
- The service charge and the tip each show as their own line, on the checkout bill, the customer's order page, printed bills, the order screen in your dashboard and WhatsApp order messages.
- Both are part of the order total, so online payments charge them with the rest of the order.
- If you edit an order's dishes, the service charge is worked out again at its percentage. A tip keeps its amount.
